Whenever there is a road accident, there are three kinds of people. One is an onlooker, the second is someone who tries to benefit out of the situation and the third one is of a special kind, those who try to help.

Vishwanath Gaitonde would never have thought, like many of us, that his 17-Yr-Old daughter would ever be a victim of a road accident. But that is what happened.

Ananya Gaitonde, an Andheri (Maharashtra) resident, was hit by a two wheeler at a junction near Four Bungalows. She was left lying unconsciously on the road for an hour. No bystanders came to help. They remain onlookers.

Her phone got stolen within a few minutes of the accident and, according to her father, few of the bystanders tried to take advantage of her.

Later, an elderly woman named Anita and her daughter, Sweety Goel, came to help her. They were on the other side of the road boarding an auto-rickshaw when they heard a loud thud and they went near the point of accident to know what happened. Seeing a girl lying unconscious, they tried to help. While they were helping, the crowd dissuaded them from doing so. They sprinkled water on the accident victim’s face, when Ananya got consciousness, she didn’t remember anything.

The mother and daughter duo then took Ananya to their building complex.

The Logical Indian spoke to Sweety Goel, one of the good samaritans, who said, “No one came to help. Even when we were trying to help, people asked us to not get involved, it is a case of a road accident.’’

She further added that the people need to be sensitive. How can they leave an accident victim lying on the road? It seems that no one wants to involve themselves into these cases. Even when she was taking the victim to her building, no one came to help.
After some time, she recalled her father’s number. Sweety made the call. Ananya’s father, whose office was nearby, came swiftly. They took Ananya to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Andheri. She had no external injuries. Initial CT Scan reveals she suffered a minor fracture on the rib.

The Logical Indian also spoke to Ananya’s father. He informed us that his daughter is recovering but she doesn’t have any memory of what happened after the accident and of the day.

Her father has filed an FIR and the police are trying to find the culprits. The area where the accident happened doesn’t have CCTV cameras but the police has written to the traffic department to see whether they can get anything from cctv footage at the signal- the site of the accident.

This is one of the accident-related incidents where onlookers, opportunists and helpers were there. It is upto us what we want to be. The Logical Indian appreciates Sweety Goel and her mother for helping Ananya. As Sweety Goel told to us, she was appalled at the apathy of the people and with those who were just standing around and clicking pictures. Adding to that, she said if she and her mother had not helped her, then it would have been difficult for her to live with the guilt. She didn’t leave the accident spot till Ananya got consciousness. There is already a Good Samaritan Law which protects anyone who helps road accident victims. Additionally, the Delhi govt. has announced a reward for good samaritans.
