Youth in Maharashtra are angry over the delay in the results of MPSC examination, the reduction in job vacancies and many other matters which are related to MPSC exams.

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), an independent body, conducts state services exam to fill Class I and II gazetted posts of deputy collector, deputy superintendent of police and so on and as well as conducts reviews to fill PSI, sales tax inspector (STI) and assistant section officer (ASO) posts.

More than two lakh students appear for each exam every year. However, the number of posts for 2018 is 69 in previous years also the case is not different in 2015 it was 377, for 2016 was 135 and for 2017, 377.

The Protest

On February 9, Avinash Shete, a resident of Ahmednagar, tried to burn  himself in front of the ministry for failing an examination despite hard work. For the past several days he was beating the doors of the Ministry. Avinash was demanding revaluation, but no senior official was ready to meet his demands reports The Wire.

However, those who passed the MPSC examination this year may also have to go through chaos, as the vacancy of MPSC examination is merely 69. Because of this, thousands of youths are protesting in Aurangabad and Pune in Maharashtra.

Students under the banner of Jai Bhagwan Mahasangh took out a rally from Kranti Chowk to the Divisional Commissioner’s office. 500 students participated in a rally at the Collector’s office in Pune on February 8. These protesters had various demands which include that exams be regularly conducted.

Rallies are being held till February 13 by students in over 13 cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Latur, and Nagpur. Across the state, students have ten major demands, including transparency in the examination process, over 45,000 posts for Class I and II be filled and so on.

Reason

MPSC has not announced post-Sub Inspector(PSI) exam dates for the last two years. Besides, there is no timetable fixed for when they are going to conduct exams, leaving the students with no choice but to wait and keep studying. Students are now demanding that the MPSC should follow the Tamil Nadu pattern and announce exams six months in advance and that in the same advertisements, the timetable for all exams, interviews, and details on joining dates should be announced.

Recently, MPSC advertised only 450 jobs in the state, comprising of 28 assistant room officers, 34 tax inspectors and 387 police sub-inspectors. Reportedly, 3000 positions are lying vacant in Maharashtra.

Navnath Salgar, an aspirant, said, “The government has issued the advertisement exactly at the time of agitation to divert the attention of stakeholders.” Mahesh Bade, another candidate said, “Almost eight lakh candidates prepare for the MPSC exam. The number of posts up for recruitment is dismal.”

What does the MPSC Say?

Meanwhile, MPSC officials said, “The advertisement was issued based on the requirements given by various departments. We do not decide on the number of posts and vacancies.”

Students also demanded the installation of biometric scanners, to tackle the increasing number of cases in which dummy candidates appear for exams. Therefore, people should be allowed into an exam centre only after the biometric attendance and mobile jammers should also be placed during the exam.
