This App Connected Two Families Seeking Kidney Donors From Miles Away

In an incident which is no less than a miracle, an app connected two families in two states from two different religions who were looking for kidney donors.

Ever since doctors declared that his wife’s kidney was a poor mismatch, 53-year-old Abdul Aziz, a resident of Baramulla in Kashmir, was looking for a kidney donor. Miles away, 42-year-old Manjula Devi’s family from Patna was looking for a kidney donor. Her husband’s kidney was not a good enough match for her.

Without hoping for much, both the families registered themselves on a mobile app ‘iKidney’, developed by Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan. Three months later, the two families got an ideal donor match in each other.

The Perfect Match

After all the requisite examinations and tests, experts found that the kidney of Manjula’s husband, 46-year-old Sujeet Kumar, was a good match for Aziz.

Aziz’s wife Shazia’s kidney, on the other hand, was a perfect match for Manjula. The ‘swap transplant’ was successfully carried out at a private hospital in Mohali by Dr Ranjan.

According to Dr Ranjan, transplants done using ikidney app has 100 percent success rate.

“I feel very fortunate that we got in touch with Shazia’s family. It gives me a great source of strength that humanity, above all religion, is the greatest of all,” The Indian Express quoted Manjula, who received Shazia’s kidney, as saying.

Technology That Helps In Organ Donation

Kidney-swap is emerging as a lifesaver as there are lakhs of deaths every year due to kidney failure. Using this mobile-based application, around 16 transplants have been successfully carried out.

Swap transplant refers to the exchange of the organ between two families, who are unable to donate organs to their own family member because of mismatch in blood groups.

On the app, people in need of a transplant fill up their details, which are then matched with others by doctors. Once matched, the two parties come together for the transplant.

There are hundreds of people who want to donate organs and bring about a change, but a lot of them are unaware of the process involved in doing it.

Technology is taking care of this issue now. Besides iKidney, E Donor Card mobile app, which was launched a few years ago by Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) Foundation, a non-governmental organization promoting and supporting deceased organ donation and transplantation in India, is making the procedure easy.

Through this app, one can get access to a donor card enabling them to pledge their organs and tissues after their death. Anyone who is 18 years of age or above can register for donation.

Nothing can be more fulfilling than giving hope and a new life to someone in need, and technologies are making it easier to leave behind a legacy.
