ICICI Foundation To Reach The Milestone Of Providing Free Vocational Training To 5 Lakh Individuals, By FY20

ICICI Academy for Skills inaugurated its new centre in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh; the 26th centre of ICICI Academy in the country and second in the state.
ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth (ICICI Foundation), the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of the ICICI Group, recently announced that it will reach the milestone of providing free vocational training to a cumulative of 5 lakh individuals, of which 2.5 lakh will be women, from economically weaker sections across the country by FY’20.
In pursuit of achieving this milestone, ICICI Academy for Skills (ICICI Academy), an arm of ICICI Foundation has launched a new centre in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh to offer free skill training to the youth from economically weaker sections. It is the 26th centre of ICICI Academy in India and second in this state, after Lucknow.
The centre will be providing vocational training in two courses, namely ‘Electrical and Home Appliances Repair’ and ‘Selling Skills’, and the centre will be run by ICICI Academy under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with the Department of Training and Employment, Government of Uttar Pradesh.
Initially training 320 students a year, life skills such as etiquette and grooming, communication, basic English and financial literacy will be stressed upon. Free uniforms, meal and all relevant course material will be provided to trainees by ICICI Academy.
For the ‘Electrical and Home Appliances Repair’ course, youth from the economically weaker sections who are between 18 and 30 years of age and have completed education till at least class VIII are eligible, and the candidate for ‘Selling Skills’ should have a minimum education of class X.
“We, at ICICI Foundation, identified skill development as a key tool in achieving nation’s growth. Bearing this in mind, ICICI Foundation started the ICICI Academy in October 2013 to offer free skill training to the less privileged youth of the county and give them access to job markets. We strongly believe that the skills gained through the courses will make the youth financially independent,” said Mr. Anup Bagchi, Executive Director, ICICI Bank and Member of the Governing Council, ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, at the inauguration.
The ICICI Academy centre in Lucknow was established in May 2015 and is dedicated to women students. A 12-week course in ‘Office Administration’ is offered to them. Over 3,000 women have been trained by the centre since its inception.
ICICI Academies have so far trained over 1.14 lakh youth in the country including 46,000 women. It has achieved 100% placement for all its eligible trained youth.
Significant work undertaken by ICICI Foundation
ICICI Foundation, further has undertaken skill training initiatives in 23 villages across 14 districts in Uttar Pradesh, including Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Pratapgarh, Moradabad, Raebareli, Bijnour, Amroha, Aligarh, Barabanki, Kanpur, Amethi, Hardoi and Meerut. Training in courses like ‘Mushroom Cultivation’, ‘Bee Keeping’, Pearl Farming’, ‘Dairy & Vermicompost’ ‘Dress designing’, Soft Toys making’, ‘Candle Making’ and ‘Rural Electrical and Home Appliances’ has been offered. These locally relevant skills enable the state’s rural communities to find employment and earn a livelihood without having to leave their ecosystem. ICICI Foundation also facilitates trainees with credit and market linkages.
ICICI Foundation was founded in early 2008 by the ICICI Group. It has been successfully contributing to the key enablers required for widespread participation in economic opportunities in India in an attempt to promote inclusive growth. ICICI Foundation operates through ICICI Academy for Skills, ICICI RSETIs and the rural initiative, and aims at working towards building capabilities and developing innovative models that can be replicated and scaled up in future.
ICICI Academy for Skills offers free courses in Selling Skills, Office Administration, Electrical & Home Appliance Repair, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Repair, Central Air Conditioning, Pumps & Motor Repair, Paint Application Techniques, Tractor Mechanic, Two & Three Wheeler Service Technician, Retail Sales, Assistant Beauty Therapist and Home Health Aide. Over 1.14 lakh youth, including 46,000 women, have been trained since its inception, and ICICI Academy aims to take the number to 1.5 lakh by FY20.
The ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth started a programme in 2016 to benefit rural areas by offering villagers training in over 50 locally relevant skills. An integral part of the curricula includes a module on Entrepreneurship Development. Through this project, over 1.91 lakh villagers in over 1,200 villages across 29 states.
Further, ICICI Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs) under ICICI Foundation undertakes skill development activities in Udaipur and Jodhpur districts of Rajasthan. It has trained over 81,000 people of which 54% are women since its inception.
Through all these initiatives, the training of nearly 3.87 lakh people has been completed by ICICI Foundation and aims to provide training to 5 lakh individuals, of which 2.5 lakh will be women, cumulatively by FY 2020.
