In the upcoming days, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will make it compulsory for dog owners to get a dog license. What’s more is that the dogs will get a radio collar with an embedded GPS enabled chip which. Non-compliance with the new rules will lead to a hefty fine of Rs. 1000.

The Urban Development Department (UDD) gave a nod to BBMP’s plan of streamlining Bangalore’s dog licensing system. After it’s implementation, Bangalore will be the third city in India to do so, after New Delhi and Chandigarh.

Additionally, the rules also require dog-owners to clean up their dog’s poop at public spaces, especially parks, and failure to comply with the regulations will attract a fine of Rs. 200 for first-time offenders.

Details Of The Rule

According to The New Indian Express, G Anand, BBMP Joint Director (Animal Husbandry) said, “Under this, the number of dogs (pets) that an owner can own will be listed. It is just one for flat-dwellers and not more than three for individual house owners. One has to get the licence by paying a fee of Rs 110 every year. The owner has to get a radio collar on their own, which will have a chip. The chip, when read will have details of age, breed of the dog, and vaccination details.”

Anand added that the by-laws that the BBMP had sent were pending before the UDD, which are now approved and that Department of Law and Parliamentary Affairs for approval, after which the rule will be implemented within the BBMP city limits.

However, the rules also state that a dog-owner in an apartment can keep only one pet dog, whereas, for houses, it can be a maximum of three.

This move has attracted criticism from dog-owners in Bangalore. Pranav Hundoo, a Beagle owner from Bangalore, while talking to The Logical Indian said, “This move of restricting one dog to an apartment is pretty ridiculous.”

He added, “Even though the move is very noble, the BBMP needs to make the process of registration more clear and easy for pet owners.”

According to livestock census by Animal Husbandry Department, there are 3.21 lakh dogs, of which 1.05 lakh are pets.
