BJP leaders have been criticising, ridiculing, trivialising and mocking the Mahagathbandhan ever since its inception. The members of Mahagathbandhan have been accused of being greedy for power, fearful of BJP and lacking a clear direction and vision. Considering the remarks and comments of BJP leaders over Mahagathbandhan, it seems like the BJP has developed an aversion towards the very idea of parties coming together to fight against a common opponent. But is BJP being hypocritical by calling out members of Mahagathbandhan while they have 20 alliances themselves with various regional parties and independent candidates?

BJP’s opinion on Mahagathbandhan

“In order to move forward, India must have political stability, a clear policy direction and strong, decisive leadership. If we falter on any one of these, we will be letting our own people down and damaging the future” – Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

“The Mahamilawat gathbandhan being envisaged is a road to disaster. It is a race to the bottom. There is a tug of war on the issue of the leader. Four people have clearly indicated their desire to be Prime Ministers – Shri Rahul Gandhi, Behan Mayawati, Mamata Didi and Shri Sharad Pawar. Each desires to expand his or her own base and reduce that of the competitor.” – Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

“My actions against corruption made some people angry, for I prevented them from looting public money and now they have formed the mahagathbandhan.”

– PM Narendra Modi

“The members of mahagathbandhan have come together out of fear. Their politics is centred around their hatred for Modi.” – PM Narendra Modi

“Mahagathbandhan is all about greed and lust. They want to remove Modi, while we want to remove poverty and corruption. They want a ‘majboor sarkar’ (helpless government) so that they can engage in corruption. We want a ‘majboot sarkar’ (strong government) so that we can give a befitting reply to Pakistan. It is for the people to decide whether they want a ‘majboot’ or ‘majboor’ government” – Amit Shah.

BJP’s good old alliances

One should notice that BJP itself has nearly twenty affiliations with various other parties and independent candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

In one of the India Today debates, Sanjay Jha stated, “look at BJP’s own arrangements, they have over 40 people and regional parties who have supported them in their Lok Sabha victory. 17 of them have deserted them already. You have the JDU which is now saying that they are going to oppose the citizenship amendment bill in Assam. Uddhav Thackeray, one of their principle alliance partners in Maharashtra has said that he endorses Rahul Gandhi’s accusation against the Prime Minister on the Rafale scam of 130000 crores. This is the state of BJP. It’s tangible that it’s a collapsing house of cards.”

What’s the difference?

Indian elections have always been about grand alliances. More than 50 parties are contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Since 1984, no single party has managed to win the majority of seats since 1984, of course except the 2014 elections. There are alliances formed before, during and even after the elections. However, though BJP has numerous alliances, in 2014, it managed to achieve absolute majority even without the help of its alliances by winning 282 seats out of 543.
