Assam In Floods, Over 2 Lakh People Affected

Due to heavy rainfall and the overflowing Brahmaputra, 16 districts of Assam are under floods. More than 2.11 Lakh people have been affected by severe flooding in the state since June 7.

The districts affected include Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Jorhat, Kamrup, Baksa, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Morigaon.In Barpeta district, over one lakh people have been affected and nearly 2,800 hectares of crops damaged or submerged. The flood waters also submerged some areas of the Kaziranga National Park. Deer, rhinos, buffalos, tigers and elephants have been moved to the nearby Karbi hills.

Three death has been reported so far, with a fresh death reported from Baksa district on Friday. Two children were drowned in Charduar area of Sonitpur district on Wednesday.

After reviewing the situation, chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday directed vulnerability assessment of embankments on a war-footing. Gogoi also asked chief secretary V K Pipersenia to make adequate arrangements for food, medicine and drinking water for the affected people.
