Neeraj Yadav, a 42-year-old Indian para-athlete and Asian Para Games gold medallist, was found dead in northeast Delhi on Tuesday night, October 27. According to reports, he was found lying beside his car near Maujpur Metro Station and was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
A post-mortem examination was underway on Wednesday, October 28, as police investigated the circumstances surrounding his death. S Satyanarayana, head coach of the Indian para-athletics team, confirmed the death, while the exact cause and circumstances remained unconfirmed.
Police Investigation Underway
According to an IANS report, Jafrabad Police received information from GTB Hospital about Yadav’s death and initiated an inquiry under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The initial police account stated that he was found near Gate No. 1 of Maujpur Metro Station on Tuesday night.
Satyanarayana confirmed the death and said the exact reason was yet to be established. A post-mortem examination was underway at GTB Hospital on Wednesday to help determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Career And Suspension
Yadav competed in the F55 category of para-athletics. He won gold in the men’s F55 javelin throw at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta and two gold medals at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou. However, reports said his two 2023 titles were subsequently stripped following doping proceedings.
According to published reports, Yadav tested positive for stanozolol, a prohibited substance, in a sample collected in October 2023 and received a suspension. This prevented him from competing at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Japan. While his coach discussed the impact of the suspension, no confirmed link between the sporting setback and his death had been established.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The circumstances surrounding Yadav’s death remain under investigation, and it is important to avoid speculation until further details are established. His death also highlights the importance of accessible mental health support for athletes navigating professional challenges.
