Indian pickleball player Datla Ashritha Raju clinched the silver medal in the Girls’ U-18 Singles category at the Heineken Pickleball World Cup 2026 in Da Nang, Vietnam, which concluded on September 6. Ashritha finished runner-up to Vietnam’s Trần Huy Bảo Châu, while fellow Indian player Diya Mattipati secured bronze. The two Indians also teamed up to win bronze in the U-18 Girls’ Doubles. Ashritha’s performance was part of a strong Indian campaign, with the country finishing third in the tournament’s medal standings.
Ashritha Secures Global Podium
Ashritha Raju’s silver came in the U-18 Girls’ Singles draw, where she finished behind Vietnam’s Trần Huy Bảo Châu and ahead of India’s Diya Mattipati. The tournament records list her as Datla Ashritha Raju, while the Indian junior squad announcement referred to her as Ashritha Raju.
Her World Cup campaign also produced another podium finish. Ashritha partnered with Diya Mattipati in the U-18 Girls’ Doubles, with the Indian pair taking bronze. The results underline the strength of India’s junior contingent, which produced multiple podium finishes across the U-18 categories.
Selected Through National Trials
Ashritha had earned her place in India’s U-18 World Cup squad through the national junior trials held in Ahmedabad from June 12 to 14. The selection process included singles and doubles events, with Ashritha reaching the girls’ singles final and partnering Minal Shaik Kalyan in the girls’ doubles.
Before the World Cup, Indian Pickleball Association president Suryaveer Singh Bhullar described the U-14 and U-18 contingent as “the absolute future of Indian Pickleball”, adding that the athletes had been selected on merit and would represent the next generation on the global stage. He also said Da Nang would be a proving ground for the young players.
The final results suggest that the young squad made that opportunity count. India finished third in the overall medal standings at Da Nang, improving on its seventh-place finish at the 2025 edition, according to tournament-result analysis.
Telangana Talent Makes Impact
Ashritha’s achievement was also part of a strong showing by players from Telangana. The state contingent returned from Vietnam with 13 medals, two gold, seven silver and four bronze, making it the highest medal-winning state contingent from India at the World Cup. Ashritha’s U-18 silver and her doubles bronze with Diya contributed to that tally.
Vishnu Vardhan, Olympian and secretary of the Telangana Pickleball Association, said the performance reflected the depth and quality of talent emerging from the state. The result comes as pickleball continues to expand its competitive base in India, with junior athletes increasingly getting opportunities to compete through national selection programmes and international tournaments.
