Nineteen-year-old Indian archer Sheetal Devi has been crowned the ‘Para Archer of the Year 2025’ by World Archery following a spectacular season that saw her become the first armless female world champion. Announced on March 30, 2026, in Lausanne, Switzerland, the prestigious title recognises Devi’s historic gold medal win at the World Para Archery Championships in Gwangju, South Korea.
Stakeholders, including World Archery officials and the Paralympic Committee of India, have hailed her as a “true inspiration,” while Devi herself expressed deep gratitude, noting that the recognition felt “deeply personal” after a journey of immense grit and precision
A Historic Triumph In Gwangju
The young athlete from Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir, secured the top honour after defeating defending champion Oznur Cure Girdi in a nail-biting compound individual final with a score of 146-143. Devi’s performance in Gwangju was comprehensive, as she also claimed a silver in the women’s team event and a bronze in the mixed team category.
In an official statement, World Archery noted: “India’s Sheetal Devi took the honour in the para archer of the year category after another breakthrough season that included a world title in Gwangju.” Reflecting on her win via social media, Devi shared, “A heart filled with gratitude, with emotion, with everything this journey has held. Thank you.” Her unique shooting technique using her feet and legs to draw the bow and her shoulder to release continues to redefine the limits of the sport.
From The Peaks Of Kishtwar To Global Glory
Born with phocomelia, a rare condition resulting in the absence of arms, Devi’s rise to the pinnacle of world archery is nothing short of miraculous. Initially discovered by the Indian Army during a youth event in 2021, she transitioned from climbing trees in her village to training at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex.
Her 2025 accolades build upon a stellar foundation that includes a Paris 2024 Paralympic bronze, two gold medals at the 2022 Asian Para Games, and the Arjuna Award. Most recently, in late 2025, she made further history by qualifying for her first-ever able-bodied international meet, finishing third in national selection trials to earn a spot in the junior Asia Cup team.
