The conference serves as a platform for world leaders, civil society, businesses, youth, and other stakeholders to commit to bringing action and innovative solutions addressing the global water crisis.

As the world faces escalating challenges of water scarcity due to surging consumption demands, pollution, and climate change, leaders from various sectors are gathering at the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York from March 22 to 24. The conference serves as a platform for world leaders, civil society, businesses, youth, and other stakeholders to commit to bringing action and innovative solutions addressing the global water crisis.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the significance of the conference, stating, "This is more than a conference on water. It is a conference on today’s world seen from the perspective of its most important resource." The urgency of recognizing water's vital role in sustainability, peace, and international cooperation is at the forefront of discussions during the three-day event.

Addressing the Water Crisis

1. Alarming Water Scarcity Statistics:

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene, recognized as fundamental human rights, remains a challenge for approximately 2 billion people worldwide. The UN 2023 Water Conference aims to confront this issue head-on, as more people have access to mobile phones than proper sanitation. Furthermore, over 80% of wastewater is discharged untreated into the environment, contributing to environmental degradation.

2. Growing Demand Amid Climate Change:

With over 90% of disasters being water-related and climate change exacerbating the pressure, the water demand is projected to increase by more than 40% by 2050. The conference emphasizes the critical need for immediate and coordinated action to address these challenges.

Key Focus on Innovation and Action

1. Water Action Agenda:

The highlight of the UN 2023 Water Conference will be the Water Action Agenda, a compilation of commitments from Member States and stakeholders. This agenda seeks to propel transformative change for water, with over 500 commitments already registered. Ranging from open data initiatives to effective water management practices, these commitments aim to accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6).

2. Conference Objectives:

Co-hosted by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Tajikistan, the conference aims to unite global efforts around a common goal. His Highness Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands, expressed the desire to set the water wheel in motion, ensuring that water receives the attention it deserves on global agendas and policy programs.

Roadmap to a Water-Secure Planet

1. Interactive Dialogues:

In addition to plenary sessions, the conference includes interactive dialogues on crucial themes such as water for health, sustainable development, climate resilience, environment, and cooperation. These dialogues provide a comprehensive platform for diverse discussions on the multifaceted aspects of water management.

2. SDG Media Zone:

The SDG Media Zone for the UN 2023 Water Conference will feature live interviews and discussions with governments, UN agencies, influencers, and industry leaders. This platform will spotlight the Water Action Agenda commitments, emphasizing the global water crisis and innovative solutions.

As the world grapples with the imminent water crisis, the UN 2023 Water Conference emerges as a pivotal moment for global collaboration. Leaders from various sectors are coming together to not only recognize the gravity of the situation but also to commit to innovative solutions and concrete actions. The Water Action Agenda stands as a testament to the collective determination to secure a sustainable water future for all. The outcomes of this conference have the potential to shape policies, influence international cooperation, and drive transformative change towards achieving SDG 6 and ensuring universal access to clean water.
