A 15-year-old boy succumbed to his death after being hit by a javelin. The incident took place on Wednesday at the Government High School in Talwandi Malliyan village, located 21 km from Moga, Punjab.

Hira Singh was enjoying a game of football on the school ground in the afternoon. The class 9 student went to an adjoining field to retrieve the ball. A few students were practising javelin throws on this particular ground, and a javelin hit Hira in his chest. The incident occurred around 1.45 pm, and the boy died on the spot. On being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was declared dead.

It has been barely two months since a 23-year-old woman was killed by a hammer thrown by a national-level athlete. Hira’s unfortunate death is another instance that sheds light on the lack of safety and precautionary measures on sports grounds.

Hira’s parents are hardworking labourers. On the complaint of Harpal Singh, the victim’s father, the Mehna police have registered a case against the unidentified person for death caused by negligence under Section 304-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Sukhjinder Singh, the assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and investigation officer, said that the police were informed late about the incident. However, no one told the name of the player who threw the javelin.
