Navi Mumbai’s Anshuman Jhingran has become the youngest male swimmer to complete the Oceans Seven, finishing his seventh and final crossing with a swim across Japan’s Tsugaru Channel on June 30, 2026. He completed the crossing in 12 hours, 39 minutes and 29 seconds, at the age of 21 years, 3 months and 17 days.
The achievement completed a three-year journey across seven of the world’s major open-water channels and made Jhingran the youngest male swimmer to accomplish the feat. The Tsugaru Channel separates Japan’s Honshu and Hokkaido islands, with the swim involving demanding conditions, including changing winds, tides and cold water.
A Historic Final Swim
Jhingran’s final Oceans Seven crossing was the Tsugaru Channel, the stretch of water separating Honshu and Hokkaido. On June 30, 2026, he completed the swim in 12 hours, 39 minutes and 29 seconds. At 21 years, 3 months and 17 days, Jhingran became the youngest male swimmer to complete all seven Oceans Seven crossings. His achievement placed him among the small number of swimmers worldwide to have completed the demanding challenge.
Seven Crossings In Three Years
Jhingran’s Oceans Seven journey began with the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland in July 2023. He subsequently completed the Catalina Channel in August 2023, Cook Strait in January 2024, the Molokai Channel in October 2024, the Strait of Gibraltar in May 2025 and the English Channel in August 2025. The Tsugaru Channel was the seventh and final crossing. Together, the seven swims took him through different marine environments, requiring endurance and preparation for changing temperatures, currents, tides and weather conditions.
From Pool Swimming To Open Water
Jhingran began his swimming journey as a competitive pool swimmer before moving into open-water swimming. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he suffered a bicycle accident that resulted in a broken forearm and wrist. During his recovery, his coach Gokul Kamath introduced him to open-water swimming. Jhingran subsequently began training for longer distances and gradually moved towards marathon swimming. His early achievements included long-distance swims in the waters around Mumbai and a crossing of the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka in 2022.
A Young Swimmer’s Early Records
In July 2023, Jhingran became the youngest person to complete the North Channel, swimming between Northern Ireland and Scotland at 18 years and 125 days. He completed the crossing in 11 hours, 28 minutes and 52 seconds. The achievement became the starting point of his Oceans Seven campaign. His preparation involved extensive endurance training, open-water sessions and cold-water acclimatisation, alongside the guidance of his coaching and support team.
Years Of Preparation And Endurance
Jhingran trained under coach Gokul Kamath at the Fr Agnel Sport Centre in Navi Mumbai while preparing for his long-distance open-water swims. His training included extensive preparation for demanding channel crossings, and he went on to complete the remaining six Oceans Seven swims after beginning the challenge with the North Channel in 2023. His seventh and final crossing, the Tsugaru Channel in Japan, was completed on June 30, 2026.
