On Monday, 2 February 2026, a 40-year-old Anganwadi cook, Kanchan Bai Meghwal, reportedly lost her life while saving approximately 20 children from a massive bee attack in Ranpur village, Madhya Pradesh.
The incident occurred at an Anganwadi centre under the Madawada Panchayat in Neemuch district when a swarm of bees descended on children playing in the compound. Kanchan Bai acted with extraordinary courage, wrapping the children in tarpaulins and floor mats to shield them before moving them to safety inside a room.
While she successfully ensured the safety of every child, she bore the brunt of the attack, suffering hundreds of stings. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival, leaving behind a family that depended entirely on her as their sole breadwinner.

Sacrifice For The Most Vulnerable
The sudden attack occurred around noon when the Anganwadi students were engaged in routine outdoor activities. According to local witnesses, the swarm appeared without warning, likely from a large beehive located on a nearby tree that had become agitated.
Kanchan Bai, who was the president of the ‘Jai Mata Di’ self-help group and responsible for the mid-day meals, did not hesitate to place herself between the children and the aggressive insects.
Villagers noted that a functional handpump used daily by the community is situated near the same tree, highlighting a persistent danger that residents had previously worried about. The community is now in deep mourning, calling her final act a rare and profound example of selfless sacrifice.
A Family In Crisis
Kanchan Bai was more than just a dedicated worker; she was the emotional and financial pillar of her household. Her husband, Shivlal, suffers from paralysis and is unable to work, making her the only earning member for her three children, including two daughters and a son.
Sub-Inspector Nilesh Solanki of the Sarvania Maharaj police post confirmed that the body was handed over to the family on Tuesday following a post-mortem examination. Local residents and family members are now appealing to the district administration for immediate financial assistance.
She died a hero’s death, but her children are now left with nothing, stated a village elder, emphasizing the urgent need for the government to support the family of the woman who gave her life for the state’s children.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we are deeply moved by the heroism of Kanchan Bai Meghwal, whose instinctive love and courage saved 20 young lives. Her story is a heartbreaking reminder of the silent, immense contributions of Anganwadi workers who often work under challenging conditions for minimal pay.
It is a matter of profound empathy that a woman who protected the future of her village has left her own children in a state of vulnerability. We believe that true dialogue on public safety must include the proactive removal of environmental hazards like agitated beehives from childcare centres.
We urge the Madhya Pradesh government to not only honour her memory with a bravery award but to provide a secure pension and educational support for her children.
