Non-profit organizations (NGO) working towards the betterment of society is not rare, but it is the work that a particular NGO does that separates it from the rest. ‘Yeh Mera India (YMI)’ is one such non-profit, social change maker and voluntary citizens’ group, which has made its name for the wonderful, unique initiative it has taken up to change the world for the better.
YMI is engaged in humanitarian, educational, healthcare, environmental and other activities to bring about positive changes within the weaker sections of the society. YMI is ready to fill the gaps no matter which gap is required to be filled in, be it in the field of education or environment. The ideals of YMI will ensure that “One day the golden bird will fly again.”
Three projects undertaken by YMI are Vidyaneeradhi – imparting education, Prakriti – co-creating an eco-friendly environment and Swaasthya – focussing on holistic health, and Swadeshi – self sustainable units based on skill development.
Launch and aim of Yeh Mera Kolkata
“‘Yeh Mera Kolkata’, ideated by YMI and co-hosted by MASH project, was started with the goal to revive, reinstate and rebuild our City of Joy. It will provide a collective social consortium for all organizations to work towards building an interdependent ecosystem to mutually grow and develop a better future for the city,” said Nidhi Poddar, Digital Media Head of YMI, in conversation with The Logical Indian.
National Cleanliness Day, January 30, marked the launch of Yeh Mera Kolkata. The event of the launch was held in Kolkata’s Northern Park, Elgin Road, with Ashim Bose, Ward Councillor of Kolkata’s Bhawanipore, honouring the event as chief guest. He also unveiled Kolkata’s first social newspaper ‘Saath’, a trilingual fortnightly newspaper which serves as the voice of common citizen. The event was made brighter by the team of Yeh Mera Kolkata and the supporting organizations.
“With the launch, we, with the help of students of nearby schools gave the park a complete makeover. To begin with, we cleaned the park and left it spick and span. The team also painted the walls with beautiful quotes and paintings on social issues. Ashim Bose and the team also carried out plantation work in the park,” said Nidhi.
Ye Mera Kolkata will continue to do wonders till October 2, 2019 and ensure that there is cleanliness in the city, which marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
“This eight-month long drive aims to bring about a real change in the environment of Kolkata and its citizens. The team will work towards one social issue each month, dedicating all their time and effort to bring about a positive change,” Nidhi said.
The eight initiatives include sanitary napkin plant and vending machine installations, slum welfare and upliftment, air pollution and its mitigation, effective use of plastic, its recycling and waste management, setting up of schools and other educational institutions, tree plantations, rebuilding and renovating public utility places like bus stands and marathon on the banks of river Ganga — Run for Ganges.
Speaking at the launch, founder of Yeh Mera India, Smita Agarwal said, “More hands work better and spread out to bring in more happiness, smiles, and sunshine and make this world a better place for us to live in and through this project we try to do the same.”
Mr. Shreyas Bajoria, City Manager of Mash Project speaking on way ahead, “We aim to include several colleges and schools along with other voluntary organizations like Rotaract, Rotary and youth organizations to include participation from all the concerned authorities right from the grass root level”.
