Sushant Rohilla, a 3rd year student of Amity Law School had committed suicide at his home on 10.08.2016 at about 1:30 PM. The reason for him committing suicide is believed to be detention from appearing exams, by the college for alleged low attendance. Students and friends have blamed the college administration for the suicide and also have lauded Sushant as a brilliant and hardworking student who was arm twisted by the college administration.
The students have demanded the resignation of the Director of the Law School and a faculty member, who as per them had been deriving “sadistic pleasures” in harassing the student. Mr Rohilla’s family says that the reason for his low attendance was a fractured leg. In an email written to the Amity founder Dr Ashok Chauhan on May 11, Sushant wrote, “I will not be able to mentally survive this if I am debarred”. “The university administration did not acknowledge his pleas,” said Mehak, Sushant Rohilla’s sister. The suicide note does not explain the reason for taking his life. In its official statement Amity University has said “All students of Amity Law School, Delhi and the management as well as the whole Amity fraternity are extremely sad on the loss of our dear student Sushant Rohilla.
It is a great loss to Amity Law School and the Amity fraternity as a whole. Amity Law School, Delhi, is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh IP University, Delhi. The students were detained as per the decision of Guru Gobind Singh IP University and in that Amity Law School itself had absolutely no role.” The students have alleged that there is grave arbitrariness on the Law School’s part in awarding sick leaves and On Duty (OD) attendance.
Student and friends of Sushant have already held huge protests calling for an independent investigation into the suicide besides calling for the resignation from the administration. Sushant was supposed to be in 4th year, however when approaching the administration for his admission, he was informed he was detained due to lack of required attendance.
What do his friends say about Sushant? Sushant’s friends say the detention due to shortage of attendance does not show the complete picture, they claim he was an excellent student as.
1. He was the President of the Debate Society. 2. He successfully helped organize 3 editions of moot court competitions. 3. He managed the souvenir committee and brought in lots of sponsors for the event. 4. His team was the runners up in the 1st international RK Tanka Memorial Moot Court Competition, 2016 organized by NLIU Bhopal. 5. He mentored a team of juniors who went on to win the USLLS Moot Court Competition.

The Logical Indian demands from the government an independent investigation into the issue and address the demands raised by the students. Prima facie, there seems to have been a disregard for the situation of Sushant. It is despicable that such insensitivity is being alleged on the administration of leading institutions. We appreciate the students who have come out in support of Sushant.
