A fresh political controversy has emerged in Maharashtra after rumours surfaced that some Members of Parliament from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), or Shiv Sena (UBT), may be considering switching sides.
In response, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party has called an emergency meeting of its MPs and senior leaders on June 18 and reportedly issued notices to those whose loyalty has come under question, warning of possible disciplinary action if they fail to attend.
Senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut alleged that attempts were being made to poach MPs through monetary offers ranging from ₹15 crore to ₹50 crore, although no evidence has been publicly presented to support these claims.
Raut maintained that the party remains united and expressed confidence that its MPs would stay with the organisation. The developments have reignited discussions about political defections in Maharashtra, a state that has witnessed significant party realignments in recent years.
Party Moves To Contain Crisis
The latest speculation has placed Shiv Sena (UBT) under the political spotlight, with the party leadership moving swiftly to contain concerns of another possible split.
According to reports, the Uddhav Thackeray camp has scheduled a crucial meeting for June 18 at 11 am, seeking to reaffirm support among its elected representatives and address growing rumours of internal unrest.
Speaking at a press conference on June 17, Sanjay Raut alleged that efforts were being made to lure MPs away from the party through large financial inducements. “There was an attempt to buy MPs. They were offered ₹50 crore,” he claimed.
Raut further alleged that some legislators had been approached with offers of ₹15 crore to leave the party. While the allegations have generated widespread political discussion, no documentary evidence has been publicly released, and there has been no independent confirmation of the claims.
Raut also adopted a firm stance toward those allegedly contemplating defection. “If anyone wants to go, they can resign and leave,” he said, arguing that elected representatives who wish to switch political sides should first return to the electorate and seek a fresh mandate.
At the same time, he stressed that he believed all Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs remained loyal to the party and that reports of defections were still speculative. He maintained that the MPs had secured their electoral victories under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray and on the party’s symbol and ideology.
The press conference drew further attention when Raut used strong language while referring to alleged rebels. Defending his remarks later, he said such expressions were commonly used in Marathi political discourse and reflected his frustration over reports of elected representatives being influenced by money. “What will you say about a person who leaves a party by accepting ₹15 crore? Will you shower flower petals on such a person?” he asked.
Echoes Of Earlier Splits
The current controversy has inevitably drawn comparisons with the political upheaval that reshaped Maharashtra politics in 2022. That year, a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde triggered the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government and led to a major split within the Shiv Sena.
The Election Commission subsequently recognised the Shinde faction as the official Shiv Sena and allotted it the party’s traditional bow-and-arrow symbol, while the Uddhav faction adopted the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray).
The latest rumours have revived concerns because Shiv Sena has a long history of internal challenges and leadership disputes. Founded by Bal Thackeray in 1966, the party emerged as a powerful force in Maharashtra through its advocacy of Marathi identity and later its embrace of Hindutva politics. However, over its nearly six-decade journey, it has experienced multiple rebellions, departures of senior leaders and organisational crises.
Political analysts note that even unverified reports of defections now attract heightened attention because of the events of 2022 and the broader trend of political realignments in Maharashtra. The state has witnessed several dramatic shifts in alliances and loyalties over the past few years, making any speculation about party unity a matter of significant public interest.
For Shiv Sena (UBT), the issue is particularly important because maintaining organisational cohesion remains central to its efforts to strengthen its position in Maharashtra’s opposition politics. Any substantial loss of MPs could affect its parliamentary strength and influence, while successfully quelling the rumours could help reinforce the perception that the party has stabilised after the earlier split.
As of now, no Shiv Sena (UBT) MP has publicly announced plans to leave the party, and the leadership continues to project confidence. The June 18 meeting is expected to provide greater clarity on whether the current developments reflect genuine internal unrest or are simply another episode of political speculation.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Political defections have repeatedly sparked debates about accountability, public trust and the strength of democratic institutions. While allegations of monetary inducements are serious and deserve thorough scrutiny, they must be backed by credible evidence before conclusions are drawn. At the same time, the recurring discussions around party switching highlight a broader concern: voters often elect representatives based on a particular mandate, ideology and leadership. When political loyalties shift, transparency and public accountability become essential to maintaining faith in democratic processes.
