In a significant development amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Air India on Tuesday operated flight AI916D from Dubai to New Delhi, bringing home 149 passengers and eight crew members safely. The flight marked the first arrival by an Indian carrier in the national capital after widespread airspace disruptions in West Asia led to mass cancellations and uncertainty for travellers.
The operation was carried out with the coordination of the Government of India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which have been closely monitoring the situation. Officials described the arrival as a carefully planned effort to ensure passenger safety while maintaining essential connectivity during a volatile period.
Relief for Stranded Travellers as First Indian Carrier Lands
Air India, in a statement after landing, said it was “happy to welcome our guests and crew from Dubai aboard flight AI916D,” expressing gratitude to Indian authorities and local officials in Dubai for their cooperation. According to airline representatives, the flight was operated under enhanced safety protocols, including real-time monitoring of airspace conditions and alternative routing strategies where required.
The arrival comes after days of major disruptions across international routes connecting India to the Gulf region. More than 80 international flights were reportedly cancelled at Delhi airport alone, while several Indian and foreign carriers suspended or rerouted services. The uncertainty left many Indian nationals in the UAE and neighbouring countries stranded, facing soaring ticket prices, repeated rescheduling, and limited availability of seats.
Civil aviation authorities stated that control rooms have been activated to assist passengers, and embassies in the region remain in touch with affected citizens. Officials emphasised that passenger safety remains the highest priority, and further operations will depend on evolving security assessments.
Airspace Restrictions and Regional Escalation
The disruption follows a sharp escalation in hostilities involving Iran and Israel, which triggered airspace closures and heightened military activity across parts of West Asia. As a precaution, several countries restricted civilian air traffic through sensitive corridors, leading to cascading effects on global aviation networks.
The UAE, a major transit hub for international travel, witnessed temporary restrictions that significantly affected routes between India and Europe, North America, and the Gulf. Airlines were compelled to either cancel services or take longer alternative routes, increasing operational costs and travel time. For many travellers, especially migrant workers and families, the sudden changes created financial and emotional strain.
While some limited services are gradually resuming, aviation experts caution that flight schedules remain fluid and subject to sudden revision. Authorities have urged passengers to rely only on official airline communications and government advisories before making travel plans.
