The captain of Air India flight AI2379, which was flying from Phuket to Delhi on August 4 when the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet of altitude amid severe turbulence, has reportedly tested positive for psychoactive substances in a post-flight dope test, according to reports. Air India, however, has said the test results have not been shared with the airline and that it is therefore not in a position to comment on the reported finding.
The Airbus A320 was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members when the incident occurred, with 13 passengers and four crew members sustaining injuries and being taken to hospitals. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident, with the aircraft’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder secured for examination. The development has raised questions about crew fitness and aviation safety, although the reported test result has not been officially confirmed by Air India.
17 Injured After Sudden Altitude Drop
The Phuket-Delhi flight encountered severe turbulence during its journey on August 4, causing the aircraft to experience a sudden loss of altitude of around 300 feet. The incident reportedly occurred while the aircraft was cruising over Odisha. Passengers and crew members were thrown into the air, with some hitting the cabin ceiling, overhead compartments and the aisle. Air India said 13 passengers and four crew members were injured and taken to hospitals for medical evaluation.
The airline had earlier said that five passengers had been discharged while others continued to receive treatment. The aircraft itself remained operational and landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11:07 am, around 43 minutes ahead of schedule.
The incident also prompted immediate attention from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu visited injured passengers at a Delhi hospital on August 4. The DGCA subsequently began examining the circumstances surrounding the turbulence and the aircraft’s handling during the incident. Air India said it was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the aircraft manufacturer had also been notified. The airline said the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and crew remained its foremost priority.

Following the incident, aviation authorities secured the aircraft’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, which can provide investigators with information about the aircraft’s movements, cockpit communications and actions taken by the crew. The DGCA’s investigation is expected to examine the sequence of events, weather and turbulence conditions, how the flight was operated and whether all prescribed safety procedures were followed. Four crew members were still hospitalised as of August 8, according to reports. Meanwhile, the pilots underwent the required post-flight drug screening.
Reports now claim that the captain’s test returned positive for psychoactive substances. However, Air India has said that while the tests were conducted as required, the results have not been communicated to the airline. This means the reported finding remains unconfirmed by the airline and should not be treated as a final determination of the captain’s fitness or conduct.
