DGCA Investigates Severe Turbulence on Air India’s Phuket-Delhi Flight

India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has launched a detailed investigation after Air India Flight AI2379, operating from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi, encountered severe mid-air turbulence on August 4, leaving 15 passengers and crew members injured.

The Airbus A320neo landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, where emergency medical teams attended to those onboard. According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), seven passengers were initially admitted to hospital, while the remaining injured passengers and crew received treatment and observation.

Later updates indicated that more passengers sought medical evaluation for injuries sustained during the turbulence. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu visited the injured at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, directed officials to monitor their condition every two hours, and instructed the DGCA to conduct a comprehensive inquiry.

The regulator has ordered investigators to examine weather conditions, possible clear-air turbulence, cockpit decision-making, operational procedures, and flight recorder data, while Air India has been asked to preserve all relevant records. The airline has said it is fully cooperating with the investigation and confirmed that the aircraft landed safely after the turbulence event.

Probe Focuses On Flight

The incident unfolded while Flight AI2379 was cruising between Phuket and Delhi when it encountered sudden, severe turbulence that caused violent movement inside the cabin. Passenger accounts shared with media organisations described moments of near weightlessness and an abrupt drop that left many believing the aircraft was in serious danger.

Some passengers reportedly suffered injuries after striking overhead compartments or cabin fixtures, while cabin crew moving through the aisle were also affected. Preliminary reports have suggested the aircraft may have briefly lost around 300 feet in altitude before stabilising, although investigators are expected to verify this using the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

Officials have cautioned against relying on unverified claims circulating on social media, including suggestions that the aircraft performed extreme manoeuvres, noting that these have not been supported by available flight data.

The DGCA’s investigation will cover meteorological forecasts, actual weather conditions along the route, possible clear-air turbulence, cockpit communication, pilot response, adherence to standard operating procedures, aircraft performance data, autopilot inputs and warning systems.

Air India has been instructed to preserve maintenance records, operational logs, crew reports and passenger injury reports for the inquiry. Visiting the injured passengers, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu reviewed their treatment with doctors, Air India officials, DGCA representatives and Ministry of Civil Aviation officials.

According to the PIB, the minister directed hospitals to provide medical updates every two hours and instructed the regulator to carry out a thorough investigation into every aspect of the incident. Air India, in its statement, said the injured passengers received immediate medical assistance after landing and thanked passengers for their cooperation while confirming its full cooperation with the DGCA’s inquiry.

Growing Concern Over Turbulence

The incident has renewed attention on the increasing frequency of severe turbulence worldwide and the challenges it poses for commercial aviation.

While investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the turbulence on Flight AI2379, aviation experts believe it could involve clear-air turbulence (CAT) a phenomenon that develops without visible storm clouds and is difficult for conventional onboard weather radar to detect.

Unlike turbulence associated with thunderstorms, CAT often provides little warning to pilots and can occur near jet streams at cruising altitude, increasing the risk of injuries if passengers or crew are not wearing seat belts.

Researchers have increasingly warned that climate change is altering atmospheric wind patterns, strengthening wind shear at cruising altitudes and potentially increasing the frequency and intensity of clear-air turbulence on several international routes.

Although scientists continue to study the precise relationship between global warming and turbulence, airlines and aviation authorities around the world have been investing in improved weather forecasting, turbulence detection technology and revised operational procedures to reduce risks.

Safety experts also continue to stress one of the simplest yet most effective precautions: keeping seat belts fastened whenever seated, even when the seat belt sign is switched off, as unexpected turbulence can occur without warning.

The findings of the DGCA’s investigation could help shape future safety recommendations and operational guidance for airlines operating in increasingly unpredictable atmospheric conditions.
