What Is Clear Air Turbulence? The Weather Phenomenon Behind Air India’s Phuket-Delhi Flight Incident

An Air India flight (AI2379) travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi encountered severe clear air turbulence (CAT) on August 4, injuring at least 17 people, including passengers and cabin crew. The aircraft reportedly lost around 300 feet in altitude within seconds, throwing unbelted passengers and crew members against the cabin ceiling and into the aisles before it landed safely in Delhi.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation and recovered the aircraft’s flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box, to determine what happened. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said the incident is being closely monitored, while Air India reiterated that the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remain its highest priority.

The incident has also renewed public interest in understanding what clear air turbulence is, why it occurs without warning, and how pilots work to minimise its impact.

Why Clear Air Turbulence Happens

Unlike turbulence associated with thunderstorms or towering clouds, clear air turbulence occurs in otherwise clear skies, making it one of aviation’s most unpredictable weather hazards. It is usually caused by sudden changes in wind speed or wind direction, known as wind shear, particularly near powerful jet streams—fast-moving bands of air that flow several kilometres above the Earth’s surface. When aircraft pass through these invisible pockets of unstable air, they can experience sudden jolts ranging from mild bumps to severe vertical movements.

Because CAT forms without visible clouds, pilots cannot see it through the cockpit windscreen and onboard weather radar cannot reliably detect it. Instead, flight crews rely on detailed weather forecasts prepared before departure, satellite data, specialised turbulence prediction models, and real-time reports from other aircraft flying ahead on similar routes. Air traffic controllers also relay turbulence reports between pilots, allowing aircraft to adjust their altitude or route whenever possible.

However, not every patch of clear air turbulence can be avoided. Sometimes it develops rapidly or occupies a large section of airspace, leaving pilots with little option but to fly through it while ensuring passengers and crew are prepared.

According to officials, the turbulence on the Phuket-Delhi flight lasted around four to five minutes. While modern aircraft are designed and certified to withstand forces much stronger than even severe turbulence, injuries often occur because people are standing, serving meals, or have removed their seatbelts when the aircraft suddenly drops or rises.

Investigation Begins

The DGCA has begun analysing data from the aircraft’s flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder to reconstruct the sequence of events and understand the intensity of the turbulence. Videos shared by passengers after the incident showed damaged overhead compartments, scattered luggage, and shaken travellers, illustrating how quickly a routine flight can become frightening despite no mechanical failure.

Aviation experts stress that turbulence itself rarely threatens the structural integrity of commercial aircraft. Instead, the greatest risk comes from unsecured passengers and cabin crew being thrown around the cabin during sudden movements. This is why airlines increasingly advise travellers to keep their seatbelts fastened whenever they are seated, even if the seatbelt sign has been switched off.

Scientists have also been studying the possible impact of climate change on turbulence. Research suggests that rising global temperatures are altering atmospheric conditions and strengthening wind differences around jet streams, which may be increasing both the frequency and intensity of clear air turbulence on some busy flight routes.

Although every turbulence event cannot be directly linked to climate change, researchers believe warming of the atmosphere is creating conditions that favour stronger air currents at cruising altitudes. As international air travel continues to grow, airlines and aviation authorities are investing in improved forecasting tools, better data sharing between aircraft, and more sophisticated turbulence detection systems to enhance passenger safety.

The Air India incident is a reminder that even with remarkable advances in aviation technology, nature continues to present challenges that demand constant vigilance. Modern aircraft are engineered to withstand severe turbulence, and pilots undergo extensive simulator training to safely handle such situations. Equally important are timely weather forecasting, effective communication between pilots, air traffic controllers and airlines, and transparent investigations whenever incidents occur.

For passengers, one of the simplest yet most effective safety measures is also the easiest to overlook: keeping a seatbelt securely fastened throughout the flight while seated. As researchers continue to examine how changing climate patterns may influence turbulence, investments in better forecasting, smarter technology and public awareness will become increasingly important.

The safe landing of the Phuket-Delhi flight reflects the resilience of modern aviation systems and the professionalism of flight crews under pressure. Going forward, the findings of the DGCA’s investigation could help strengthen operational procedures and improve preparedness for similar incidents.
