In a tragic and still-evolving incident in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda area, two young sisters, an infant and a three-year-old lost their lives while their parents remain hospitalised after falling ill, allegedly following the consumption of dosa made from ready-made batter bought from a local dairy.
While the family suspects food poisoning, officials say the exact cause of death remains unclear, with early post-mortem findings and conflicting claims adding complexity. Police and food safety authorities have launched a detailed investigation, collected samples and are awaiting forensic reports. The dairy owner has denied any lapse, stating no other complaints have been reported.
A Meal That Turned Fatal
According to preliminary findings, the incident began when the family consumed dosa prepared at home using batter purchased from a nearby shop. Shortly after, the father reportedly developed symptoms such as vomiting and uneasiness, prompting medical attention. Over the next couple of days, the mother and their elder daughter also began experiencing similar symptoms and were admitted to hospital. The infant is believed to have been affected indirectly, possibly while being breastfed during the mother’s illness. Despite treatment, the younger child passed away first, followed by the elder sibling a day later, leaving the family and local community in shock.
Police officials have registered a case of accidental death and are recording statements from the parents and medical staff involved in the treatment. A senior official noted that while the adults displayed symptoms such as vomiting, the absence of other typical indicators of food poisoning has made the case less straightforward. “We are investigating all possible angles. The forensic report will be key to determining the exact cause,” the official said.
Investigation Underway Amid Conflicting Claims
Authorities, including local food safety teams, have collected samples of the dosa batter and initiated laboratory testing. A dedicated investigation is underway to examine whether contamination, improper storage or other factors could have contributed to the illness. Officials have also inspected the dairy from where the batter was purchased, reviewing hygiene practices, sourcing and storage conditions.
Meanwhile, the dairy owner has denied allegations linking the product to the deaths, stating that the same batch was sold to multiple customers without any similar complaints. The shop owner has reportedly cooperated with authorities by providing remaining stock and relevant records. The divergence between the family’s claims and the seller’s defence has made the investigation more complex, with authorities emphasising the need to rely on scientific evidence before drawing conclusions.
