The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport has recommended Ahmedabad, India, as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, set to mark the event’s centenary. Now headed for final approval at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on 26 November 2025, this decision not only celebrates 100 years since the inaugural games but also positions India as a rising leader in global sports.
Ahmedabad will become only the second Indian city to host the Games after New Delhi in 2010, contributing to India’s broader ambitions to host the Olympic Games in 2036. Nigeria’s Abuja also bid for 2030, but the Commonwealth has pledged to support its future hosting goals, possibly for 2034.
Gujarat’s Growing Sports Ecosystem
Ahmedabad’s bid was strengthened by Gujarat’s rapidly developing sports infrastructure, backed by significant investments from the state government. The Gujarat Sports Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd is spearheading the construction of six new integrated sports complexes, with an estimated budget of ₹6,000 crore. These will meet international standards in design, capacity, and facilities.
Currently, the Sports Authority of Gujarat operates around 30 sports complexes and plans to add 31 more across 13 districts. Residential sports hostels housing nearly 4,000 athletes provide facilities including synthetic tracks, high-performance gyms, and sports psychology units.
This infrastructure growth complements the newly built venues like the Naranpura Sports Complex, which has already hosted continental events and will be a key venue for 2030.
“It would be an extraordinary honour for India to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Amdavad. The Games would not only showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities, but also play a meaningful role in our national journey towards #ViksitBharat 2047.”… pic.twitter.com/phmyxVOPAT

Historic and Inclusive Vision
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will highlight inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation, embodying the Commonwealth’s “Games Reset” principles. India’s proposal emphasises compactness, affordability, and integration of parasport, gender equality, and human rights. The Games in Ahmedabad and nearby Gandhinagar are projected to stimulate urban renewal, employment, and tourism, focusing on optimising existing resources rather than large-scale greenfield projects.
Officials highlighted the long-term legacy framework to extend benefits beyond the competition, fostering community engagement and athlete development. High-profile supporters like India’s Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha hailed the recommendation as a proud and historic milestone for Indian sport.
A day of immense joy and pride for India.
