Sunil Chhetri becomes first Indian to score 50 international goals

Sunil Chhetri, captain of the Indian national football team has become the first Indian footballer to score 50 international goals.

Born in Secunderabad, Telangana, Chhetri began his professional career at Mohun Bagan in 2002. Bagging international deal, he signed for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in 2010, becoming the third football player from the subcontinent of note to go abroad.

He helped India win 2007, 2009 and 2012 Nehru Cup as well as the 2011 SAFF Championship. He was also one of India’s best players during the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup in which India won the tournament and thus qualified for their first AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.

30-year old Chhetri is also the striker for Bengaluru FC in the I-league.
Chhetri has also been named AIFF Player of the Year four times in 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014. He bagged India’s one of the most prestigious sports award Arjuna Award as well.

For the record, it was Chhetri who scored India’s all the goals in the team’s four joint preliminary round 2018 World Cup qualifying games so far.
