India can boast of a new champion. Shubham Jaglan, the 10-year-old son of a milkman in rural Haryana, recently won the IMG Academy World Junior Golf Championship in San Diego, California, USA.

“I have finally done it!” a jubilant Shubham posted on Facebook. “I have won one of the most prestigious tournaments in junior golf!!” He thanked his family, the Delhi Golf Club, the Golf Foundation, and his coach, Nonita Lall Qureshi for guiding him.

Shubham began training at the age of 5 when a golf academy opened in his village near Panipat. The academy shut down after 2 months, but Shubham’s coach convinced his family to move to Delhi so that he could continue training. “I picked him up and brought him to Delhi. I saw his swing and saw that it was technically sound,” Amit Luthra, Asian Games gold medallist and the man behind the Golf Foundation, recalled of Shubham.

2 years later, after selling their cows and buffaloes, Shubham’s family shifted to Delhi, where he continued his training devotedly. His father says, “If we hadn’t gone I would’ve always regretted it.” The Golf Foundation saw potential in him, and he delivered consistently outstanding results.

When asked what Golf meant to him, Shubham replied “I would say the three things it has given me most are focus, discipline and becoming the most special guy in the world!”

Child prodigies touch our hearts and inspire us all. The Logical Indian community applauds Shubham Jaglan for his talent and persistence, and hopes he continues to win accolades for India.
