Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is attempting to influence voter rolls in poll-bound West Bengal by submitting thousands of Form 6 applications used for new voter enrolment within a short span of time.
He claimed around 30,000 applications were filed in just a few hours, potentially including individuals from other states, and demanded CCTV verification from election authorities. The BJP has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, while officials have not confirmed any irregularities and maintain that all applications undergo due verification. The issue has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Allegations Over ‘Bulk Form 6 Submissions’ Raise Concerns
The controversy emerged after Banerjee met the state’s Chief Electoral Officer and flagged what he described as an unusually high volume of Form 6 submissions. According to his claims, nearly 30,000 applications were submitted within six to seven hours, a figure he argued would be difficult to process under standard procedures. He further alleged that several applicants may already be registered voters in states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, raising concerns about duplication and electoral integrity.
Banerjee described the situation as a serious threat to free and fair elections and called for the release of CCTV footage from the electoral office to identify those responsible for submitting the forms. He suggested that such a large-scale submission could indicate organised coordination. In response, BJP leaders rejected the accusations, describing them as baseless and politically motivated and maintained that voter enrolment follows due process under the supervision of election authorities.
Election Authorities Emphasise Verification Process
Amid the political exchange, election officials have not confirmed any irregularities related to the alleged bulk submissions. Instead, they have reiterated that all Form 6 applications undergo a multi-step verification process before inclusion in electoral rolls. This process typically involves document scrutiny and field-level checks to ensure that only eligible residents are added to the voter list.
The controversy comes at a crucial time as West Bengal prepares for Assembly elections. Electoral roll revision is an ongoing exercise, during which a significant number of applications are routinely submitted by new voters and those updating their details. However, disputes over voter lists have historically been a recurring issue in the state, often intensifying during election periods. Such allegations, even when unproven, can heighten political tensions and influence public perception about the fairness of the electoral process.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Allegations concerning voter list manipulation must be approached with seriousness, but also with responsibility and restraint. In a democracy, raising concerns about electoral integrity is vital, yet it is equally important that such claims are supported by verifiable evidence to avoid eroding public trust.
At the same time, institutions like the Election Commission play a critical role in maintaining confidence in the system and must continue to act with transparency and impartiality. Strengthening verification processes and ensuring timely communication can help address concerns and reduce misinformation during politically sensitive periods.
