Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to poach its Rajya Sabha MPs under what it calls “Operation Lotus”, following reports of internal political unease and speculation around possible defections.
However, there has been no confirmed resignation or official merger of Raghav Chadha or any other AAP Rajya Sabha MP with the BJP and no formal announcements have been made by either party regarding such a shift. The BJP has also not issued any statement confirming any new parliamentary inductions from AAP.
AAP Alleges Pressure Tactics
AAP leaders have raised concerns over what they describe as sustained attempts to destabilise opposition parties through inducement or pressure tactics. Referring to the long-used term “Operation Lotus”, party representatives alleged that elected members are being targeted to weaken organisational strength in Parliament. Senior AAP voices have called for stronger safeguards under the anti-defection law to prevent politically motivated switching of parties.
At the same time, there is no official confirmation of any Rajya Sabha MP resigning or defecting. Neither Raghav Chadha nor other sitting AAP MPs have publicly announced any resignation or merger with the BJP, and their names remain listed as members of AAP in parliamentary records.
Ongoing Tensions And Recurring Defection
Allegations of political poaching and engineered defections are not new in Indian politics, with opposition parties frequently using the term “Operation Lotus” to describe suspected efforts by ruling parties to split or absorb legislators from rival camps. Such claims typically intensify during periods of political instability or ahead of major electoral cycles.
The anti-defection law under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution allows mergers only when at least two-thirds of legislators of a party agree to a collective move. However, political analysts note that most such claims remain politically contested unless formally verified by the Speaker and documented in parliamentary proceedings.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we emphasise the importance of accuracy, verification and responsible political reporting, especially in matters involving elected representatives and party stability. In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly, it is essential to distinguish between verified political developments and speculative narratives.
While concerns about political inducement and weakening of opposition voices deserve democratic scrutiny, such allegations must be supported by clear evidence and official confirmation before being presented as fact. India’s democratic discourse is strengthened when all political actors prioritise transparency over sensational claims. As citizens, we must ask: How can political accountability be strengthened so that claims of defection or inducement are always backed by transparent and verifiable processes?
