Around 700 sheep and lambs were burnt to death after a massive fire broke out at a sheep shed in Mukkunda village of Sindhanur taluk in Karnataka’s Raichur district in the early hours of Friday. The blaze reportedly began around 3 am and spread rapidly across the shed before emergency teams could bring it under control.
The livestock belonged to local sheep rearer Y. Hemalatha Madhusudan Rao, whose animals were kept there for breeding and commercial sale. Villagers alerted nearby fire stations after noticing flames and thick smoke, but the animals could not be rescued in time. Authorities have registered a case and launched an inquiry while officials assess the extent of the financial loss suffered by the livestock owner.
Hundreds Of Animals Trapped Inside Shed
The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday when a fire suddenly erupted in a sheep shed located in Mukkunda village. According to initial reports, the blaze started around 3 am and spread quickly through the structure, which housed hundreds of sheep and lambs. Local residents noticed smoke and flames rising from the shed and rushed to the site, attempting to control the fire and rescue the animals.
However, the intensity of the flames and the speed at which the fire spread made rescue efforts extremely difficult. Villagers alerted fire services from nearby Karatagi and Sindhanur, and fire tenders were dispatched to the location.
Firefighters later managed to contain the blaze after several hours of effort, but by then most of the animals inside had already died. Officials confirmed that approximately 700 sheep and lambs were lost in the incident, making it a devastating blow for the livestock owner.
Authorities stated that the shed belonged to local resident Y. Hemalatha Madhusudan Rao, who depended on sheep rearing as a primary source of livelihood. The animals were reportedly part of a breeding and commercial livestock operation, and the loss represents a significant financial setback for the family.

Following the incident, police and fire department officials visited the site to assess the damage and begin an investigation. A case has been registered at the Sindhanur Fire Station, and authorities are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
