A 23-year-old man from Indore tragically ended his life by jumping from the fifth floor of his apartment in the Tapti Complex early Thursday morning, prompting serious questions about police conduct and mental health support. Raj Makwana, who struggled with breathing issues and mental stress, had stepped out for air around 2 am when a security guard challenged him, leading to police intervention; his family alleges an officer slapped him despite his apology, while authorities deny any assault and claim they merely counselled him before leaving.

This incident in Chandan Nagar has sparked outrage, with stakeholders including the grieving family demanding accountability and police insisting on a fair probe amid a postmortem revealing no external injuries.

A Vulnerable Life Cut Short

Raj Makwana lived with his family—father a cook, mother a homemaker, a brother, and two sisters—in the government housing society, a place meant for modest security. For two years, he battled mental health challenges and respiratory problems, often medicated and reliant on night walks for relief from the summer heat.

His sister Nikita vividly described the horror: around 2 am, the security guard accused Raj of loitering suspiciously, sparking a heated exchange that drew police to the scene. The family rushed to explain his condition, pleading for understanding, but Nikita claims an officer dismissed his repeated “I’m sorry” and slapped him hard, igniting fear of arrest.

Trembling, Raj fled upstairs, and minutes later, ended his life in panic—a heartbreaking loss that humanises the raw pain of vulnerability meeting perceived authority overreach.

Conflicting Narratives Emerge

Police offer a starkly different account, portraying their role as de-escalatory rather than aggressive. Chandan Nagar station head Tilak Karole stated the guard reported Raj disturbing residents, so officers arrived, learned of his illness from his mother, counselled both, and departed about 45 minutes before the jump—no slaps, no threats.

DCP Rajesh Dandotiya reinforced this, noting the postmortem found no injury marks consistent with assault, and a case has been registered for investigation into the suicide circumstances. Family persists in allegations, urging video footage review from society cameras, while officials promise transparency; this clash highlights deeper trust gaps, with the probe now key to uncovering truths amid public scrutiny.

The Logical Indian Perspective

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for police to approach vulnerable individuals with empathy, especially those with mental health struggles, prioritising dialogue over force to foster harmony in our communities. Kindness and understanding from authorities could prevent such irreversible losses, aligning with our commitment to peaceful coexistence and positive change. How can we ensure police training emphasises compassion to protect lives like Raj’s—what steps should society take next?
