President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday evening approved a major reshuffle of governors and lieutenant governors across nine states and Union Territories, appointing former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and transferring Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi to West Bengal.
The appointments, announced through an official communiqué from Rashtrapati Bhavan, will take effect once the new appointees assume charge. Sandhu replaces Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while Ravi takes over in West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose earlier the same day.
The administrative overhaul also affects Telangana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and comes weeks before key assembly elections, drawing both political attention and debate about the timing and implications of the changes.
Taranjit Singh Sandhu Named Delhi LG
Former Indian ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, marking a significant transition in the capital’s administrative leadership. Sandhu, a seasoned Indian Foreign Service officer with more than three decades of diplomatic experience, has previously served in key roles including India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and deputy chief of mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington.
His appointment comes as Vinai Kumar Saxena, who served as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor since 2022, has been transferred to Ladakh in the same reshuffle. According to the official notification issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the changes are part of a broader effort to reorganise gubernatorial leadership across several states and Union Territories.
Sandhu’s diplomatic career has been widely recognised within India’s foreign policy establishment. He was India’s envoy to the United States from 2020 to 2024 and played a key role in strengthening bilateral ties during a period marked by geopolitical shifts, global health challenges and expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.
After retiring from diplomatic service, he briefly entered electoral politics, contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amritsar. His new role as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor will place him at the centre of governance in the national capital, where the office often plays a crucial role in navigating administrative coordination between the Union government and the elected Delhi government.
RN Ravi Shifted To West Bengal
In another key development, R. N. Ravi, a retired Indian Police Service officer who had been serving as Governor of Tamil Nadu since 2021, has been transferred to West Bengal. Ravi replaces C. V. Ananda Bose, whose resignation from the post was accepted by the President earlier on Thursday. The move comes at a politically sensitive moment as West Bengal prepares for upcoming assembly elections, with political leaders and observers closely watching developments around administrative leadership in the state.
Ravi’s tenure in Tamil Nadu was marked by several high-profile disagreements with the state’s ruling government, particularly over legislative bills and policy decisions. His transfer to West Bengal has therefore sparked debate among political commentators and opposition leaders regarding the implications of the move in a politically charged environment. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also criticised the decision, highlighting concerns about the timing of the appointment ahead of the poll schedule.
The reshuffle extends beyond Delhi and West Bengal. Among the other notable changes, retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed Governor of Bihar, while Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been moved to Maharashtra. Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed Governor of Telangana, and former Bihar Assembly Speaker Nand Kishor Yadav will serve as the new Governor of Nagaland. Meanwhile, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will discharge the additional responsibilities of Governor of Tamil Nadu until a permanent appointment is made.
