A 19-year-old biotechnology student from Tripura was allegedly subjected to a brutal physical assault by her live-in partner in Gurugram, leaving her critically injured and hospitalised at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
The accused, Shivam (19), a resident of Delhi, has been arrested by Gurugram Police after the survivor’s mother alerted authorities. The couple had reportedly met in September 2025 and were living together in a paying guest accommodation in Sector 69 while discussions around marriage had begun between their families.
Police officials have confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and an investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events. The survivor remains under medical supervision, and authorities have assured strict legal action.
Suspicion-Fuelled Late-Night Assault Alleged
According to police officials, the young woman, a biotechnology student at GD Goenka University, had been residing in a PG accommodation with the accused for the past few months. Investigators state that the two met in September 2025 and soon entered into a relationship, with both families reportedly initiating conversations about marriage. However, tensions are said to have escalated in recent weeks after Shivam allegedly began doubting the survivor’s character.
The alleged assault came to light after the victim’s mother contacted police, expressing concern that her daughter had been brutally beaten. Acting on the complaint, officers reached the residence in Sector 69 and found the young woman in a severely injured condition. She was initially taken to a nearby government hospital before being referred to AIIMS Delhi due to the seriousness of her injuries. Medical reports indicate multiple injuries consistent with physical assault.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Hitesh Yadav confirmed the arrest of the accused and stated that statements are being recorded. “The accused has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered under appropriate sections of the law.
The investigation is ongoing, and all aspects are being examined,” he said. Police have also begun collecting digital evidence and speaking to individuals familiar with the couple to determine whether there were prior instances of abuse or warning signs that went unnoticed.
Relationship Background And Expanding Probe
Preliminary findings suggest that the couple had been in a live-in arrangement for several months, a decision reportedly taken with the knowledge of their families as marriage discussions progressed. Friends and acquaintances have told investigators that the relationship appeared serious, though there may have been episodes of conflict in recent weeks. Authorities are working to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the alleged assault, including whether there were earlier verbal disputes or controlling behaviour.
Police sources indicate that the incident allegedly occurred following a late-night argument, during which the accused is said to have physically attacked the young woman. While the exact trigger is still under investigation, suspicion and mistrust are believed to have played a central role. Investigators are reviewing phone records, messages and other communications to verify claims and better understand the dynamics of the relationship.
Legal experts note that cases involving intimate partner violence in live-in relationships are treated with the same seriousness as those within marriage, with provisions in law offering protection to survivors. The police have stated that additional charges may be invoked depending on medical findings and further evidence. Meanwhile, the survivor continues to receive treatment, and her condition is being closely monitored by doctors. Her family has reportedly travelled to Delhi to remain by her side during her recovery.
The case has sparked renewed conversations about the vulnerabilities faced by young people navigating relationships away from home, particularly students who relocate for higher education. It also raises broader questions about recognising early warning signs of possessiveness, emotional manipulation and escalating aggression patterns that often precede physical violence.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This deeply distressing case is a stark reminder that violence within intimate relationships often hides behind the façade of affection and future promises. Suspicion over a partner’s “character”, possessiveness and the urge to control are not signs of love they are red flags that demand attention and intervention. No disagreement, doubt or emotional conflict can ever justify brutality.
As a society witnessing changing relationship norms, including live-in partnerships among young adults, we must ensure that evolving freedoms are matched with emotional maturity, gender sensitivity and accountability. Families must create safe channels for their children to speak openly about relationship struggles without fear of judgement.
