At least 39 people died after two high-speed trains collided in southern Spain during a horrific derailment.

At least 21 people have been confirmed dead, and over 70 others injured, following a catastrophic high-speed train collision near the town of Adamuz in southern Spain on 18 January 2026.

The disaster occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time when a private Iryo train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed on a straight stretch of track, crossed into the opposite direction, and slammed into an oncoming state-run Renfe train bound for Huelva.

Rescue operations, supported by the Military Emergencies Unit and the Red Cross, continued throughout a difficult night to extract passengers from mangled carriages that plunged down a four-metre embankment.

While the investigation into the cause is ongoing, Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the accident as “truly strange” given the modern equipment and recently renovated infrastructure involved.

Spain Train Derailed

The collision took place in the province of Córdoba, roughly 360 kilometres south of Madrid, on a section of the high-speed rail network that had been refurbished as recently as May 2025. This infrastructure, which cost roughly 700 million Euros to upgrade, was supposedly in “perfect condition.”

The private Iryo train involved was also relatively new, being less than four years old. Despite these high standards, the rear carriages of the Iryo service derailed and invaded the parallel track at the exact moment the Renfe train was passing at high speed.

The resulting impact caused the first two carriages of the Renfe train to tumble off the tracks, making the rescue mission particularly complex due to the difficult, steep terrain.

Eyewitness Accounts

Passengers aboard the trains described a sudden, violent sensation that felt like a “seismic earthquake” before the carriages tilted and darkness fell.

Salvador Jiménez, a journalist for broadcaster RTVE who was on board the Iryo train, reported that survivors had to use emergency hammers to smash windows and crawl out of the wreckage. Among the confirmed fatalities was the 27-year-old driver of the Renfe train.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his profound sorrow, calling it a “night of deep pain” for the nation, while King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia offered their condolences. International leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have also shared messages of solidarity with the victims and their families.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder that no matter how much we invest in high-tech infrastructure, the safety and sanctity of human life must always remain the ultimate priority. At The Logical Indian, we believe that progress is hollow if it is not underpinned by the most rigorous safety protocols and constant vigilance.

Our hearts go out to the people of Spain, especially the families who have lost loved ones in what appears to be a highly unusual and devastating failure of a system designed for security. We advocate for a transparent and thorough investigation that leaves no stone unturned, ensuring that such a horror is never repeated.
