Trump Rules Out Immediate US Strikes on Iran, Says Protest Killings Have Stopped, Options Remain

President Trump pauses military strikes on Iran, citing reports that the killing of protesters and executions have stopped.

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that the United States will not currently launch military strikes against Iran, choosing diplomacy over kinetic action.

The announcement followed intense lobbying by Middle Eastern allies, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, who warned that strikes could destabilise the global economy and trigger a regional war.

President Trump stated he was informed on “good authority” that the killing of protesters has paused and that planned executions, including that of 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, have been stayed.

While a near-total internet blackout continues to shield the true extent of the unrest, UN officials and human rights agencies estimate that over 2,600 people have been killed since protests began in late December.

Pivot To Diplomacy

The decision to hold off on strikes marks a dramatic shift from earlier this week when the White House warned that “help is on its way” for Iranian demonstrators.

Regional leaders from Turkey, Oman, and the UAE reportedly convinced President Trump that military intervention would hand the Iranian regime a nationalist rallying cry, potentially saving it from internal collapse.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia and the UAE warned that US bases on their soil would become targets for Iranian retaliation if strikes were launched.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff suggested that Iran’s “dire” economic state, marked by a collapsing rial and water rationing, may finally be forcing Tehran to consider a diplomatic agreement on nuclear enrichment and regional proxies.

Halted Executions

In a statement on Thursday, President Trump noted, “We were told that the killing in Iran is stopping, and there’s no plan for executions.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later clarified that nearly 800 scheduled executions had reportedly been halted following US warnings of “grave consequences.”

Despite these claims, international monitors like the UN Fact-Finding Mission remain alarmed, noting that 18,000 detainees are currently being processed in makeshift morgues and detention centres.

While the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, told international media that “calm has prevailed,” eyewitness accounts emerging via smuggled Starlink terminals depict a brutal, nationwide crackdown that remains the deadliest in the country’s history since 1979.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we believe that the choice of diplomacy over destruction is always the right one, yet we must not mistake the absence of bombs for the presence of peace.

While we are relieved to see a pause in military escalation, a nation that operates behind a communications blackout while thousands are detained cannot truly be at peace.

We advocate for a world where dialogue is not just a strategic alternative to war, but a commitment to the fundamental dignity and voices of the people. True harmony is built on transparency, not on the silence of a shutdown internet.
