Indian Railways Rolls Out Free Wi-Fi at Over 6,100 Stations, Expands CCTV Surveillance Nationwide

Indian Railways has extended free high-speed Wi-Fi services to 6,117 stations across India, covering over 93% of its network as of December 2025, without any separate funding from the Ministry of Railways.

This milestone, achieved through public-private partnerships (PPPs) with Google and RailTel, connects over 12 crore unique users who log in daily for browsing, streaming, and work.

Railway Board officials describe it as a “digital revolution,” while passengers praise seamless access; revenue from ads sustains the service, bridging urban-rural divides amid no new budgets.

Sweeping Network Reach and Passenger Impact

From bustling hubs like New Delhi, Howrah, and Chennai Central to remote outposts in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir, the Wi-Fi now permeates 6,117 of 7,325 stations-a staggering 93.5% penetration.

Speeds hit up to 100 Mbps on 5G-enabled spots, with over 25 lakh daily logins fuelling 1.5 crore GB of data usage monthly. This rollout humanises long waits and journeys, turning platforms into productivity zones.

Jaya Varma Sinha, Chairperson of the Railway Board, emphasised its transformative role: “Free Wi-Fi at stations is a game-changer for digital inclusion, empowering students, job seekers, and families without burdening taxpayers.”

Daily commuter Priya Sharma from Mumbai echoed this: “During my hour-long waits, it’s a lifeline for online classes and checking job portals-especially vital post-pandemic.” Small traders like Rajesh Kumar in rural Bihar add, “I now sell goods via apps while travelling, boosting my income.”

Self-Sustaining Model Powers Expansion

The genius lies in its zero-cost structure for the government. Providers like Google and RailTel install and maintain infrastructure, earning from non-intrusive, targeted ads displayed post-login via the RailWire app.

Revenue-sharing with RailTel-typically 40-60% splits-funds operations, as confirmed by no dedicated budgetary lines in the Ministry’s 2025-26 allocations. QR-code scans or OTPs via mobile ensure quick, secure access, with 5G pilots at 500+ stations pushing speeds beyond 300 Mbps.

Ministry spokesperson Amitabh Sharma clarified: “No separate funds have been sanctioned; this PPP exemplifies self-sustaining innovation aligned with Digital India.”

Since inception, it has saved the exchequer over ₹1,200 crore while serving diverse users, from migrants reuniting virtually to tourists navigating unfamiliar routes.

From Humble Pilot to Nationwide Lifeline

The journey began in 2016 with a pilot at Mumbai Central, scaling to 400 stations by 2020 amid pandemic-driven demand for contactless services. Google’s 2018 tie-up accelerated growth, hitting 1,000 stations by 2022, then surging post-5G spectrum auctions.

Key milestones include app-based authentication in 2023, reducing login friction by 70%, and Northeast expansions in 2024 despite terrain challenges.

This aligns with broader reforms under PM Gati Shakti, complementing projects like Vande Bharat trains. Challenges persist-intermittent rural signals and ad overload complaints-but upgrades like AI-driven bandwidth allocation address them.

Historical context underscores its relevance: pre-2016, station Wi-Fi was sporadic and paid, excluding the masses.

Broader Digital Equity in Motion

Beyond connectivity, the initiative fosters education via platforms like SWAYAM and e-governance apps, vital for 70% rural passengers. It supports women-led households tracking remittances and farmers accessing market prices, narrowing India’s 50% digital literacy gap per NITI Aayog data.

Environmentally, it cuts paper tickets by promoting UTS app usage.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This feat celebrates collaborative governance that weaves digital harmony into India’s vast social fabric, promoting empathy by connecting the unconnected-be they urban professionals or rural elders-without fiscal strain.

It embodies kindness in public service, urging coexistence through shared access to knowledge and opportunity, and sparks positive change by prioritising inclusion over expenditure.
