Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the government’s plan to procure 10,000 dual desks from the Tihar Jail factory to address the ongoing furniture shortage in government schools.
The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 8.95 crore, covering transportation and related expenses.
The education department has earmarked Rs 20 crore in the 2025-26 budget for upgrading school furniture and essential infrastructure. This initiative aligns with government efforts to improve learning environments and promote the rehabilitation and skill development of Tihar inmates.

Addressing School Furniture Shortage
Delhi currently operates 1,086 government schools, many of which face acute shortages of basic furniture due to rising enrolments and new classrooms.
In April, the education department conducted a special survey involving school principals and district officials, identifying a demand for 23,321 dual desks across 127 schools.
Additional requests from other institutions increased the total demand to nearly 25,000 desks. The government has decided to meet this requirement in phases, with an initial procurement of 10,000 desks manufactured by inmates at the Tihar jail carpentry factory.
Rehabilitation Through Productive Engagement
The Tihar Jail factory is well known for producing furniture that matches Public Works Department quality standards but costs 25% less than market prices.
The initiative is part of broader efforts encouraged by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to use prison-made goods for inmate rehabilitation and societal reintegration.
Delhi Chief Minister Gupta emphasised that the project not only strengthens educational infrastructure but also provides meaningful employment and skill-building opportunities for inmates, reflecting a commitment to social reform and inclusive growth.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
This multi-faceted initiative exemplifies how government policy can simultaneously address public needs while fostering second chances for incarcerated individuals. It highlights the value of sustainable solutions that unite social welfare, education, and economic prudence.
By embracing programs that empower communities both inside and outside prison walls, The Logical Indian encourages further innovations that generate inclusive progress.
