Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, has ignited a fierce political controversy by accusing Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, of being a “radicalised Islamist” who “yearns for war with India.”

In a recent Sky News interview, Aleema Khan drew sharp contrasts between Munir’s hardline stance and Imran Khan’s “pure liberal” approach, asserting the imprisoned former prime minister sought peaceful ties and friendship with India, including with the ruling BJP.

These revelations come amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions and heightened concerns over Imran Khan’s safety and mental well-being in Adiala Jail, where he is currently detained. The military has not yet issued an official statement responding to Aleema’s allegations.

Sectarian Divides and Political Turmoil in Pakistan

Aleema Khan’s comments have shone a spotlight on the deepening fissures within Pakistan’s power structures, exposing the growing divide between its civilian leadership and the military establishment.

She characterised General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief appointed in November 2024, not only as a military figure but as an ideologue motivated by Islamic radicalism and conservativism, which in her words “drives his aspiration for conflict with India.” Aleema’s forthright interview criticised Munir’s aggressive posture, warning of grave consequences from his belligerent policies that threaten regional security.

By contrast, Aleema painted her brother Imran Khan as a leader with a fundamentally liberal vision, seeking dialogue and friendship beyond traditional geopolitical enmities.

She stated that Imran pursued a policy of peace and outreach even towards the BJP, India’s ruling political party an unconventional but revealing insight into former PM Khan’s diplomatic ambitions.

This narrative directly challenges the often stereotypical depictions of Pakistani politics as uniformly hostile towards India and highlights the nuanced tensions that exist between civilian governance and military interests.

Aleema urged the international community, particularly Western nations, to apply diplomatic pressure on Pakistan’s military to secure Imran Khan’s release, presenting him as an “asset” to Pakistan’s majority population, indicative of the country’s vast public support for his leadership and reformist agenda. Her appeal illustrates how internal Pakistani politics remain deeply entangled with international diplomacy and India-Pakistan relations.

Imran Khan’s Detention and Concerns over His Safety

The allegations come at a distressing time for Imran Khan and his supporters. Detained in the notorious Adiala Jail, Imran reportedly faces harsh conditions, including mental torture designed to break his spirit and diminish his political influence.

Following Aleema’s public denunciation of General Munir, Imran Khan himself released a powerful statement from prison, labelling Munir a “mentally unstable tyrant” who fabricated cases against him and his wife, Bushra Bibi. Imran threatened that if anything happened to him, the army chief would be held responsible, underscoring the dangerous and volatile nature of Pakistan’s internal political crisis.

This development has intensified public and international attention on the treatment of imprisoned political leaders in Pakistan, raising urgent questions about the rule of law, human rights, and political repression in the country.

The tense relationship between Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the military has reached a critical juncture, reflecting broader challenges faced by civilian governments operating under pervasive military influence.

Regional Tensions Rise Sharply

Aleema Khan’s accusations surface against the backdrop of rapidly escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, two nuclear-armed neighbours with a long history of conflict and diplomacy.

General Asim Munir’s assertive policies and hardline rhetoric have contributed to anxieties about a potential renewal of hostilities, which disturb an already fragile peace in South Asia.

Aleema’s portrayal of Munir as a figure eager for war amplifies worries about the military’s dominant role in shaping Pakistan’s foreign policy, raising the stakes for diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining stability in the region.

At the same time, Imran Khan’s professed vision of peace and rapprochement with India offers a contrasting pathway, highlighting the divergent approaches within Pakistan’s own leadership.

The tension between these competing visions affects not only bilateral relations but also the internal dynamics of Pakistan, where supporters of democratic reforms and civilian supremacy face resistance from entrenched military powers.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

In light of these developments, The Logical Indian reiterates the critical importance of dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding as cornerstones to resolving conflicts, both within nations and between neighbours. Aleema Khan’s revelations expose the fault lines but also present an opportunity for reflection on the urgent need to prioritise peace over provocation. The Logical Indian stands firmly with initiatives that encourage coexistence and kindness, urging political leaders and citizens alike to transcend divisive rhetoric.

Rather than escalating tensions with confrontational postures, there is a collective responsibility to foster environments where peaceful resolutions and democratic values can flourish. Civil society, governments, and international partners should collaborate to ensure the security and rights of political prisoners like Imran Khan while supporting diplomatic engagements to reduce Indo-Pak tensions.
