A lawyer practising in Gurugram and Nuh courts, Mohammad Rizwan Khan, has been arrested in Nuh district on charges of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), marking the third espionage-related arrest in the Mewat region this year.
The 24-year-old advocate from Kharkhadi village in Tauru was taken into custody following inputs from central investigative agencies, with police recovering substantial digital evidence including WhatsApp chats and call logs that indicate ongoing contact with suspected Pakistani operatives. Authorities allege Rizwan was involved not only in espionage but also in funneling crores of rupees into India through hawala channels to fund terrorist activities and drug smuggling.
The arrest has stirred security concerns in the border-adjacent region, while Rizwan’s family denies any anti-national intent, describing his contacts with Pakistan as routine family communications.
Details of the Arrest and Evidence
Rizwan was detained first near Pipaka village while returning from Gurugram and was formally arrested after a case was registered at Tauru Sadar police station. Investigators discovered that since 2023, Rizwan had been maintaining online contact with individuals in Pakistan using multiple mobile phones and coded aliases saved under names like “Ashan Don” and “G.”
Besides exchanging messages, suspicious financial transactions totalling crores of rupees were traced to Rizwan’s Punjab National Bank account in Tawadu, Haryana. Police believe these funds were brought through hawala operations linked to ISI handlers and subsequently channelled to support illicit operations including terrorism and espionage.
Another lawyer associated with Rizwan has also been detained for questioning as part of the expanding probe. Officials have begun freezing bank accounts and launched raids to dismantle the purported espionage network.
Context of Espionage in Mewat Region
This arrest follows two similar cases earlier in the year from Mewat: Mohammad Tarif, arrested in May for sharing classified military information and supplying SIM cards to Pakistani agents, and Arman, apprehended for widespread contacts with over 70 Pakistan-based numbers.
The Mewat district’s geographical closeness to the India-Pakistan border and its complex socio-political dynamics have made it a focal point for intensified intelligence surveillance. Law enforcement agencies suspect a coordinated ISI-linked espionage network working through local contacts to compromise national security.
Though official statements from the Nuh Superintendent of Police remain pending, the gradual uncovering of this web has caused unease in the local populace and heightened national attention on border-area security.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
The Logical Indian recognises the imperative of safeguarding national security and condemns espionage activities that threaten the country’s integrity.
At the same time, it champions the principles of justice and the presumption of innocence, calling for transparent investigations devoid of prejudice. In diverse and sensitive regions like Mewat, where allegations can impact entire communities, it is crucial to proceed with empathy, ensuring families are not alienated or unfairly targeted. Maintaining peace and social cohesion alongside robust security responses requires dialogue and collaborative community engagement.
