Fresh protests led by Nepal’s Gen Z have reignited unrest in Bara district, prompting authorities to impose a curfew from 1 pm to 8 pm local time to curb escalating tensions.

The youth-led movement, now in its second day, saw violent clashes between Gen Z demonstrators and cadres of the Communist Party of Nepal, Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML).

The confrontations erupted near key areas, including Simara Airport, where police resorted to tear gas and briefly suspended airport operations. District officials highlighted concerns over public safety as political tensions rise ahead of the national elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Gen Z Protest Again in Nepal

The ongoing protests stem from a wave of discontent among Nepal’s youth over corruption, political instability, and lack of economic opportunities, issues that fueled a nationwide Gen Z uprising in September which ousted former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

That uprising resulted in significant casualties and widespread destruction of government institutions. Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has since been appointed and called for restraint, urging political parties and citizens to allow a peaceful election process. She has directed security forces to maintain order while ensuring safe political campaigning.

Details of Latest Confrontations

The Bara unrest involves incidents of injuries among Gen Z protestors, with the group lodging complaints alleging unaddressed violence by CPN-UML supporters. Authorities detained local ward officials for their alleged involvement in preceding clashes.

The latest demonstration and subsequent administrative response underline Nepal’s fragile political landscape and the urgency of addressing youth grievances constructively.

Observers note that unresolved issues from the last uprising continue to fuel tensions, with concerns about unaccounted weapons and inmates complicating security efforts.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The resurgence of Gen Z protests manifests the growing demand for political accountability and inclusion by younger generations. While their energy and activism are pivotal to democratic evolution, the escalation into violence risks undermining the democratic process and social harmony.

This situation calls for meaningful dialogue, respect for peaceful protest, and urgent reforms addressing deep-seated causes like corruption and economic despair.
