Maithili Thakur, the 25-year-old folk singer turned politician, created history by winning the Alinagar Assembly seat in Bihar’s 2025 elections, defeating seasoned Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Binod Mishra by over 11,700 votes.

Contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket for the first time, Maithili secured nearly 85,000 votes against Mishra’s 73,000. This win establishes her as the youngest Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Bihar. Maithili Thakur was born in Uren village, Madhubani district, Bihar, which is approximately 80 kilometres from her Alinagar constituency.

The victory is part of a broader sweeping National Democratic Alliance (NDA) triumph in Bihar, where the coalition is poised to secure a two-thirds majority, reflecting strong public support for BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership.

A Cultural Ambassador Turned Leader

Maithili’s transition from a celebrated folk singer to a political leader highlights the growing role of culture in political engagement. Known for her renditions of Maithili folk music and classical tunes on popular platforms like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs and Indian Idol Junior, she has garnered a massive following among Bihar’s youth and beyond.

Hailing from a musically inclined family in Madhubani, she campaigned extensively among constituents, blending cultural outreach with political promises. She is known for her grassroots efforts, including singing door-to-door during her campaign, which helped build a strong personal connect with voters across demographics.

Maithili emphasized the development work done by the BJP government, particularly initiatives for women’s empowerment, crediting this as a key factor in her convincing win.

Maithili Thakur’s election victory also highlights the growing influence of young women in Bihar’s political landscape. Her success represents a shift toward embracing fresh faces who combine cultural roots with modern political aspirations.

Post-victory, Thakur sang “Ae Raja Ji” in celebration with supporters, symbolising her continued connection to her musical origins even as she embarks on this new political role. This moment reflects the powerful blend of art and activism that can inspire confidence and hope among the youth and women across India, signalling a promising future for inclusive politics.

Commitments and Aspirations

Following her election, Maithili Thakur expressed her deep sense of responsibility toward her constituents. She pledged to prioritise girls’ education, expand employment opportunities for Bihar’s youth, and promote the cultural heritage of Mithila, including advocating for the promotion of Mithila painting in schools.

Notably, she proposed renaming the Alinagar constituency as Sitanagar to celebrate the cultural identity of the region. Her promises reflect the aspirations of a new generation of leaders who integrate cultural pride with development goals.

This blend of cultural identity and political commitment positions her as a fresh voice aiming to address both the socio-economic needs and cultural preservation of her community.

On election day, Maithili Thakur faced criticism for personally visiting the polling booth, an act some opponents called a violation of election conduct rules. Critics argued that her presence could influence voters directly at polling stations, which is generally discouraged.
