Ramkaran Sharma, a respected local cricketer and coach in Ganaur, Haryana, was shot dead in broad daylight near the Sub-Divisional Hospital amid a bitter political rivalry linked to municipal elections.

The prime accused is Sunil “Lambu,” a former acting chairman of the Ganaur Municipal Council, whose wife lost the last local election to Ramkaran’s daughter-in-law.

The incident has triggered panic in the community, with heightened police security and an ongoing investigation underway. Officials have condemned the violence and urged calm as tensions rise during election season.

Daylight Shooting Shocks Ganaur

The killing took place on Monday evening when Ramkaran Sharma was returning from a family wedding function. As his car neared the area outside the Sub-Divisional Hospital, he was ambushed by assailants reportedly arriving in a vehicle, who opened fire with several shots.

Three empty bullet casings were recovered from the scene by the police. Ramkaran was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts. Witnesses recount a chaotic scene with bystanders fleeing in panic.

The attack in such a public, busy space has shaken the town deeply, spreading fear among residents and traders.

Ramkaran, besides being a former Ranji Trophy-level cricketer, was well known in Ganaur for his dedication to coaching young players and fostering local talent.

His death has left a huge void for the cricket community, many of whom have expressed grief over the loss of an influential mentor.

Political Rivalry at the Core

The murder appears rooted in electoral animosity. Ramkaran’s daughter-in-law, Sonia Sharma, had defeated Sunil “Lambu’s” wife in the recent ward elections, intensifying hostilities between the families. Sunil “Lambu,” a former vice-chairman of the Ganaur Municipal Board, has been named the main suspect in the shooting.

Investigations reveal that the animosity had been brewing for months, with Ramkaran’s family alleging that Sunil and his supporters had threatened them previously.

The day before the shooting, Sunil reportedly posted on social media about receiving death threats himself, though without naming any individuals explicitly.

Police are examining this post as part of their probe. Following the attack, a murder case was registered against Sunil and unknown accomplices, and raids are ongoing to apprehend those involved.

Local officials note that political rivalries in municipal elections often escalate into violence, but this killing marks a grave escalation.

Authorities have increased police presence and patrols in Ganaur and surrounding areas to curb any further incidents. The administration is also monitoring social media and local hotspots closely.

Community Reaction and Security Measures

The incident has caused an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in Ganaur, especially among traders, families, and youth actively involved in cricket and other social activities.

Many businesses temporarily closed their shutters following the shooting, concerned about potential unrest.

Security was immediately stepped up in the area surrounding Ramkaran’s residence and the homes of the accused, as per police protocol.

Forensic experts are scanning CCTV footage from nearby establishments to gather evidence and identify accomplices or other persons involved.

Police officers, including senior officials from Sonepat, are overseeing the investigation, emphasising that justice will be pursued swiftly and firmly.

Local leaders and community members have appealed for peace and restraint during this election season, urging rival factions to resolve differences through dialogue rather than violence.

Police have also appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation and to remain calm despite the tension.

Electoral Violence in Haryana’s Wider Context

This shooting is part of a worrying pattern of election-related violence reported across Haryana during the 2025 municipal and assembly polls.

Recent months have seen multiple clashes, stabbings, and intimidation tactics involving political supporters in different districts such as Panipat, Meham, Nuh, and Punhana.

These incidents underline the volatile environment that election season creates, often disrupting democratic participation and public safety.

Despite lockdowns and police efforts, authorities report that political disputes frequently descend into physical violence, threatening the democratic process and community harmony.

Administrative officials like the Haryana Chief Electoral Officer have praising police for maintaining overall order but acknowledge isolated flare-ups of violence continue to challenge law enforcement.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The tragic murder of Ramkaran Sharma is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to uphold peace and civility in political contests.

The Logical Indian stresses that democracy must be nurtured through dialogue, respect, and empathy-never through intimidation or bloodshed.

Violence, especially in public spaces, threatens not only individuals but the social fabric holding communities together.

As citizens and leaders, fostering harmony involves rejecting vendettas and committing to transparent, peaceful electoral competition.
