India has embarked on a pioneering journey by launching a pilot program that enables e-commerce payments directly through ChatGPT, an advanced AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. This innovative initiative is a collaborative effort involving the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), fintech leader Razorpay, and OpenAI. It integrates India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with ChatGPT, allowing users to shop and complete payments seamlessly within the chat interface.
Early participants include major banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, along with Tata Group-owned Bigbasket as a key merchant, signaling a potential transformation in how Indians shop and pay online.
AI-Powered E-Commerce Payments: A New Frontier
The core of this pilot program is the integration of UPI-the backbone of India’s digital payment revolution-with ChatGPT’s conversational AI technology to enable real-time, secure, and convenient payment transactions. Users can browse products, place orders, and authorise payments without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
This smooth, AI-driven shopping experience is facilitated by UPI Reserve Pay and UPI Circle technologies, which allow users to reserve funds and confirm transactions through secure multi-factor authentication within the chatbot.
Oliver Jay, managing director of international strategy at OpenAI, emphasised the significance of blending AI with UPI, describing it as “unlocking a new era of effortless and secure commerce.” The pilot leverages UPI’s trusted infrastructure, which currently processes over 20 billion transactions per month, to revolutionise the e-commerce payment experience and increase digital payment adoption in India.
