Kondareddypally, the native village of Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, has made history as South India’s first fully solar-powered village and India’s second such village as of September 2025. Situated in Vangoor mandal, Nagarkurnool district, this village’s 514 homes and 11 government buildings run entirely on solar energy, offering uninterrupted power and eliminating electricity bills for residents.

Surplus energy is sold back to the grid, generating substantial income for villagers. The ₹10.53 crore project, initiated under Telangana’s Green Energy Mission and executed by Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TREDCO), was funded by central government subsidies and corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, reflecting a sustainable model of rural clean energy adoption for the country.

A Model Village Powered by Solar Energy

Kondareddypally has been outfitted with rooftop solar panels generating a total of 1,500 kilowatts. About 480 homes have individual 3 kW solar units, while schools and government offices operate on 60 kW of solar power. The remaining 34 mud-walled houses will be solar-powered once their government-sponsored Indiramma houses are completed, ensuring full coverage.

Each household produces approximately 360 units of electricity monthly, meeting all local energy needs without interruption. Surplus electricity is fed into the state grid at Rs 5.25 per unit, earning villagers nearly Rs 5 lakh in revenue in September alone.

Officials describe the village as a “model solar village,” successfully merging traditional rural life with modern renewable energy technology to foster green entrepreneurship and financial empowerment.

Background and Project Execution

This landmark initiative cost around ₹10.53 crore, including a ₹3.56 crore subsidy from the central government. Premier Energies provided Rs 4.09 crore through CSR funding, while TREDCO allocated Rs 2.59 crore towards infrastructure development and project execution.

Following a comprehensive survey to assess energy requirements, the installation and commissioning were completed within six months in 2025. The project exemplifies Telangana’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, promoting sustainability, and strengthening rural economies by turning power consumers into producers.

The active participation of the local community in planning and maintaining the facilities was crucial to the project’s success and long-term sustainability.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

Kondareddypally’s achievement is a powerful testament to the transformative potential of renewable energy when combined with community involvement and supportive governance. This sustainable development not only lowers environmental impact but empowers rural citizens economically, creating green entrepreneurs who contribute excess power to the grid.

At a time when India is striving to meet ambitious renewable energy targets and combat climate change, such pioneering efforts underscore the value of innovation rooted in local needs.
