Union Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, virtually interacted with 394 meritorious science students from all eight North Eastern states who visited premier ISRO centres under the NE-SPARKS programme.

Supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) in collaboration with ISRO and state governments, the initiative aims to inspire youth from remote regions by exposing them to India’s cutting-edge space technology.

During the interaction, the Minister applauded the students’ enthusiasm, highlighted India’s recent space accomplishments like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1, and encouraged them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

NE-SPARKS: Igniting Passion for Space Science

The NE-SPARKS (North East Students’ Programme for Awareness, Reach, and Knowledge on Space) programme has facilitated exposure visits to ISRO’s Bengaluru centres for 394 students in four batches since April 2025. Each batch included students from the eight North Eastern states, accompanied by state and institutional coordinators.

The programme provides immersive tours of advanced ISRO facilities and direct interaction with scientists and engineers. Minister Scindia emphasised the inclusive vision of NE-SPARKS, stating, “Every child carries a spark, a spark of curiosity and intelligence, which can shine from any part of the country.” Students shared how the visits deepened their interest in space science and helped clarify their academic goals.

Bridging the Gap: Background and Collaborative Efforts

Launched in 2025, NE-SPARKS is a flagship initiative supported by MDoNER with cost-sharing between central and state governments. It aims to bridge geographical and informational gaps through hands-on exposure to India’s space research and exploration. The programme targets 800 students, with 100 selected from each North Eastern state, spread across eight batches throughout the year.

The North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) acts as the nodal agency coordinating with ISRO HQ’s Capacity Building & Public Outreach division. This initiative aligns with broader government efforts to promote STEM education, regional development, and inclusivity in the scientifically advancing nation.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The NE-SPARKS programme is a beacon of hope demonstrating how targeted exposure and engagement can foster empathy, curiosity, and ambition in youth from underserved regions.

It embodies the spirit of inclusive progress, harmony, and coexistence by opening doors to future careers and encouraging scientific innovation. Cultivating such opportunities empowers young minds to contribute meaningfully to national development and global science.
