At 85, Dhira Chaliha Hazarika, Assam’s first female pilot and inspiration for generations, flew again over the English countryside in a historic Tiger Moth biplane.
Tracing a scenic route alongside Captain John Towell, a former British Airways pilot, she rekindled memories of her flying days over Assam while dressed in traditional muga Mekhela Sador. Her family and admirers lauded her enduring courage and motivation for young people to pursue their dreams regardless of age or societal constraints.
Early Aspirations and Pioneering Career
Born in 1940 in Jorhat, Assam, Dhira’s fascination with flying began as a child when she watched warplanes near the Burma front. Supported by her progressive father, she pursued flying against societal expectations in the 1950s, a time when women were largely confined to domestic roles.
In 1959, after securing a prestigious scholarship, she trained rigorously at the Assam Flying Club on the classic Tiger Moth and native Pushpak aircraft. Her flying lessons took place early in mornings, often before college, where she mastered complex maneuvers without modern aids like radio communication.
In 1961, at just 21, Dhira earned her pilot’s a Licence and became Assam’s first woman pilot. Her solo flight from Borjhar to Tezpur was a milestone achievement that inspired many women in Northeast India. She even boldly flew close to the pillars of the Saraighat Bridge under construction, demonstrating her fearless spirit.
A Life of Boundless Inspiration
Though Dhira’s aspirations for a commercial pilot’s license were paused after her marriage and move to London, her pioneering journey never faded. She has flown several times in the UK wearing her muga Mekhela Sador, captivating onlookers with her grace and skill.
At 85, her recent flight over Berkshire in an open-cockpit Tiger Moth, alongside Captain John Towell, connected her past and present in a remarkable testament to lifelong passion. Dhira shared happiness and hope for others aiming for their goals despite challenges.
Her granddaughter expressed pride, highlighting the motivational ripple her achievements have created within her family and community. Currently, Dhira is writing an autobiography to document her extraordinary journey and encourage others to break barriers.
Legacy Beyond Boundaries
Dhira Chaliha Hazarika’s story transcends the realm of aviation, symbolising a broader social breakthrough. She broke long-held gender norms and challenged age-related stereotypes, showing determination, courage, and grace. Receiving the PRAG Prerona Award in 2017, she stands as a living legend in Assam and Northeast India’s history.
Beyond flying, she represents the power of dreams, resilience, and heritage celebrated through her traditional attire even in the skies. Dhira’s continued inspiration is a call to society to nurture inclusive spaces where age, gender, or cultural background no longer restrict ambition.
