In a distressing incident at BBC Nursing College in Gangavati, Koppal district, Karnataka, a poor family was allegedly forced to hand over gold ornaments, including the mother Renukamma Valikar’s mangalsutra and earrings, as security for issuing a Transfer Certificate (TC) after their daughter Kaveri secured a free seat in a government nursing college.

The family had paid only Rs 10,000 of the Rs 1 lakh fee at the private college and was unable to pay the remainder. The college chairman, Dr C.B. Chinival, allegedly refused to issue the documents without full payment or gold pledge but later returned the gold and apologised after public outrage.

Family’s Struggle Against Fee Demands

Kaveri Valikar, a first-year BSc Nursing student from Muslapur village, Kanakagiri taluk, was admitted to BBC Nursing College with an initial Rs 10,000 payment of a Rs 1 lakh fee. When Kaveri secured a government seat in Gadag, her parents requested a Transfer Certificate to complete the switch.

According to the family, Chairman Dr Chinival refused to issue the TC unless the fees were fully paid or gold given as security. Renukamma, in tears, recounted how she painfully removed her sacred mangalsutra and earrings in front of her distraught husband and handed them over to the college to secure her daughter’s future. Her husband, a daily-wage labourer, expressed helplessness at the college’s demand, which they ultimately met under duress.

Public Backlash and College’s Response

Once the incident came to light, locals and netizens strongly condemned the perceived insensitivity and exploitation of a financially weak family. The college management faced widespread criticism for allegedly showing “no humanity.”

In response to the backlash, Dr Chinival publicly apologised and returned the gold ornaments within hours. The episode has ignited calls for stricter regulation and ethical governance in private educational institutions to avoid similar distressing situations.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This episode reflects the unjust burdens placed on economically disadvantaged families by some private educational institutions. The Logical Indian advocates for fair, transparent, and compassionate fee policies that respect the dignity and aspirations of all students. Education should be a path to empowerment, not a cause of distress and humiliation.
