A 14-year-old Class 9 student was allegedly raped by a married man inside a car in Daringbadi, Kandhamal district, Odisha, on the evening of September 5, 2025. The incident occurred after the girl, returning from Ganesh Puja immersion festivities at her elder sister’s house, accepted a lift from the accused.

Following the assault and threats by the perpetrator, her family filed a complaint, resulting in a swift investigation and medical examination. The accused is absconding as police intensify their efforts to apprehend him, with the case drawing widespread condemnation and prompting renewed calls for child safety.

Shocking Crime Amid Festive Celebrations

The alleged crime took place during Ganesh Visarjan, a community celebration that saw large gatherings at the Daringbadi market. The girl had joined her elder sister to participate in the festivities and witness the idol immersion. As she made her way home after the events, the accused, reportedly known to be married, offered her a lift.

Instead, he allegedly dragged her into his vehicle against her will, where the assault took place. The suspect went on to threaten the minor, warning her against disclosing the incident to anyone—a detail consistent across multiple news reports and the official police complaint.

Swift Police Action and Medical Support

Upon reaching home, the traumatised girl revealed her ordeal to her family. Acting quickly, they registered a complaint at the Daringbadi police station, galvanising immediate law enforcement action. Police recorded the survivor’s statement under the proper legal framework and ensured the completion of a medical examination-a crucial step in supporting the investigation and the victim’s well-being.

Kandhamal Superintendent of Police Harisha B C assured, “The matter is under investigation. We will nab the accused soon,” highlighting their commitment to resolving the case promptly.

Community in Shock, Demands Increased Vigilance

The incident has sent shockwaves through Daringbadi and the broader region of Kandhamal, with locals reeling from an attack that took place amid festive harmony. Calls for stringent action and increased vigilance at public events have grown louder, as residents and advocacy groups alike demand better safeguards for girls and young women.

Authorities have promised tighter surveillance around local gatherings and outreach to ensure children understand the importance of promptly reporting suspicious or predatory behaviour. Counselling and emotional support services are being extended to the victim’s family as the community rallies in condemnation of the crime.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This case is yet another grim reminder of the vulnerabilities children face-even at moments meant for celebration and joy. The Logical Indian believes that seeking swift justice is only one part of the path forward.

Societal responsibility must extend to creating genuinely safe spaces for all children by promoting awareness, community vigilance, and uncompromising empathy for survivors. As we question how such incidents can still occur, let us also ask:
