In the early hours of Tuesday, 28-year-old Jeet Ram Yadav allegedly murdered his 59-year-old mother, Gulabi, by hacking her repeatedly with an axe at their home in Bendrerbhadra settlement, Kunkuri, Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh. Following the alleged attack, he reportedly remained near the mutilated body for hours, singing angrily and playing with sand, threatening anyone who approached.

Neighbours alerted the police, who took nearly four hours of negotiation before arresting him. Officials say the exact motive is unknown but suspect the accused suffers from mental illness. The case is under investigation, and the victim’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Horrifying Crime and Neighbours’ Trauma

The spine-chilling incident unfolded around 5 a.m. when Yadav allegedly attacked his mother with an axe repeatedly until she died. Terrified neighbours reportedly spotted Yadav sitting close to the butchered body, humming angrily and playing with sand, a disturbing sight that froze the locality in fear.

Despite alarms, no one dared intervene as Yadav allegedly wielded the weapon aggressively, threatening passersby and police officers who arrived at the scene. Hundreds gathered outside the house, witnessing the chaotic scene but were unable to enter as Yadav refused to relent. Police waited several hours, strategizing to safely take him into custody due to his erratic behaviour.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

Jashpur Superintendent of Police Shashimohan Singh confirmed that Yadav was arrested after nearly four hours of negotiation and tactical planning. Singh stated that while the exact motive remains unclear, Yadav appears mentally unstable and exhibited irrational behaviour before and during the incident.

Family members said Yadav’s mental health had been deteriorating over the past two years, for which they had sought treatment from traditional healers locally known as baigas. The police have registered a murder case and are conducting a detailed investigation to determine the full circumstances behind this alleged crime.

The post-mortem results will provide further clarity on the victim’s condition and manner of death.

Context and Broader Implications

This shocking event highlights the urgent need for accessible mental health care in rural regions, where stigma and limited resources often leave vulnerable individuals without timely support.

It also raises important questions regarding community awareness and preventive measures against escalating violence resulting from untreated mental illness. Earlier this year, a similar axe-related incident was reported in Jashpur, signalling a worrying pattern of domestic violence linked with mental health issues.

Strengthening mental health infrastructure and educating communities may help identify and assist vulnerable persons before they resort to violence. The tragic incident exposes the critical need for accessible mental health care in rural India, where stigma, neglect, and lack of resources leave vulnerable individuals at risk of violence and despair.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, this disturbing incident underlines the critical importance of empathy, mental health support, and open dialogue within families and communities to prevent such tragedies.

While justice must take its course, fostering a culture of understanding, early intervention, and systemic reform is paramount for nurturing peace and coexistence. Compassionate attention to mental well-being can often be a lifeline that averts irreversible harm.
