A 23-year-old differently abled woman was found dead at her home in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh early Thursday, days after she was allegedly gangraped by three men. Police suspect suicide as the cause of death but are investigating all possibilities, including foul play.
The victim, who had speech, hearing, and intellectual impairments, had left her home without informing family on Monday evening and returned later distressed, telling her father she was raped. Authorities have formed five police teams to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Surendranath Tiwari confirmed swift registration of the rape case and said teams were tasked with tracking the accused using CCTV footage and other surveillance tools.
Police Investigation and Search for Suspects in Progress
Following the father’s complaint, police quickly launched a probe and formed multiple investigative teams to expedite arrests. DCP Tiwari revealed some suspects had been identified through evidence and surveillance but added that the accused remain at large.
The woman was discovered hanging in her room on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, prompting the police to conduct a post-mortem examination to confirm the cause of death. Authorities have assured the victim’s family of support and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Local law enforcement has appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could aid in finding the suspects.
Heightened Vulnerability of Differently Abled Women
The tragedy throws light on the particular vulnerabilities that differently abled women face amidst crime and violence. Communication challenges often delay reporting, allowing crimes to go undetected or unpunished. According to reports, the victim was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Delhi before the incident.
This case underscores the critical need for accessible and empathetic police services, robust legal protections, and community awareness to prevent abuse of vulnerable groups. Experts suggest stronger measures, including improved reporting mechanisms tailored to differently abled persons and education of authorities on sensitivity and inclusion, to create safer environments.
