On August 20, 2025, Alliance Air flight 9I756 carrying 49 passengers from Guwahati to Kolkata experienced a technical snag shortly after takeoff from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The pilot promptly declared an in-flight emergency and opted to return to the airport, where the aircraft landed safely at 2:27 pm.

A full emergency status was declared by airport authorities and later withdrawn post-landing. All passengers and crew were safely deboarded with no casualties reported. Alliance Air confirmed the incident and has launched an internal investigation to determine the root cause of the technical issue. Meanwhile, the airline is arranging alternative travel options for affected passengers.

Swift Emergency Response Ensured Passenger Safety

The mid-air technical issue was detected soon after the flight took off at 1:09 pm. The pilot informed air traffic control promptly, and the airline followed strict safety protocols by declaring a full-scale emergency at 1:42 pm. Guwahati airport authorities mobilised emergency response teams, including fire services and medical assistance, standing ready for any contingency. Emergency services were on high alert to provide immediate support if required.

Airport sources clarified that despite the emergency, regular airport operations were not disrupted. Passengers were safely and efficiently deboarded with support from airport terminal staff who ensured their comfort and safety. The airline expressed gratitude towards its crew for quick and composed handling of the situation, which helped prevent any panic and ensured the incident was managed professionally.

Importance of Aviation Safety and Regular Maintenance

This incident highlights the critical importance of ongoing aircraft maintenance and timely detection of technical faults to prevent accidents. Alliance Air emphasised that the aircraft undergoes rigorous routine checks before each flight, following strict maintenance schedules mandated by aviation regulatory bodies. In addition, pilots are trained to identify and respond to any technical or mechanical irregularities during flight, prioritising passenger safety above all.

Aviation authorities in India maintain strict audit and monitoring mechanisms to uphold airline safety standards. Any incident like this prompts a thorough investigation to identify causes, facilitate corrective measures, and prevent similar events in the future. It is part of the aviation ecosystem’s commitment to continuous safety improvements and transparency.

Interestingly, the past year has seen a few other technical challenges reported by Indian airlines, which have encouraged authorities and carriers to intensify safety protocols even further. Open communication and detailed investigations build public confidence and improve operational safety.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

At The Logical Indian, we commend the swift and professional action taken by the pilots and emergency responders during this incident. Flight safety is a non-negotiable priority, and this event reminds us of the complex challenges aviation professionals face in protecting lives. Transparency about such incidents, combined with clear communication, strengthens travellers’ trust in the airline industry.

While technical problems are unsettling, the manner in which they are handled, calmly and competently, raises public confidence. We advocate for airlines and authorities to maintain rigorous safety standards and keep passengers well informed so fears are eased through knowledge rather than speculation.
