PM Modi, Election Commission involved in ‘vote theft’: Rahul Gandhi said during Bihar Yatra

Congress’ Vote Adhikar Yatra protests alleged deletion of millions of voters in Bihar’s electoral roll amid denials from the Election Commission.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, through his ongoing ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, has sharply accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission (EC) of “vote theft”, describing it as a grave attack on both the Constitution and Bharat Mata.

The Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, swiftly rejected these allegations, issuing Gandhi a seven-day ultimatum to submit evidence or apologise.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) denounced the yatra as a political ploy, while Congress allies, including Tejashwi Yadav, rallied behind Gandhi’s demand for electoral accountability and transparency.

Rahul Gandhi’s Yatra: Rallying for Democracy and Voter Rights

Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’, a 16-day, 1,300km march spanning 20 districts, has thrust Bihar into the national spotlight. Gandhi has invoked emotive language, declaring in a post on X, “vote theft is an attack on the Constitution… It is an attack on the soul of Hindustan. Vote theft is an attack on Bharat Mata. We will neither let the EC nor Modi attack our Bharat Mata and Constitution.”

Allies and supporters see the yatra as a movement to reclaim the voice and rights of every citizen, while critics in the BJP claim it’s a bid to stay politically relevant.

Official Responses: CEC’s Ultimatum and BJP’s Critique

The Election Commission, under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, has forcefully countered Gandhi’s charges. In public statements, the CEC categorically denied any substantive irregularities, arguing that the SIR and all election protocols have been transparent and lawful.

To address concerns, the Election Commission of India made public the names of 65 lakh people who were deleted from Bihar’s voter list during the SIR, underscoring the transparency of the process. CEC Kumar issued a seven-day deadline to Rahul Gandhi to submit an affidavit substantiating his claims or to apologise to the nation, stating that unsubstantiated allegations damage institutional trust and insult the Constitution.

Both parties draw on previous years’ debates about Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), impartiality of agencies, and the core question of who gets to safeguard and define India’s democracy.

Background Context: The SIR Controversy and Electoral Rights

The ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ is largely a response to the Bihar Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process intended to update voter lists before the upcoming assembly elections. However, this SIR has become highly contentious with widespread allegations from the Congress and its allies that legitimate voters have been deleted or excluded under suspicious circumstances.

Rahul Gandhi’s campaign highlights these concerns, alleging that SIR is being misused as a tool for vote manipulation to influence electoral outcomes. This issue has ignited sharp political battles, putting electoral roll accuracy and voter enfranchisement at the centre of public debate.

The Election Commission, while defending the SIR as necessary and fair, faces intensified scrutiny and calls for greater transparency in the update process.

Electoral Participation and Voter Awareness: The Other Key Focus

While allegations of vote theft captivate much of the discourse, the ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ also shines a critical spotlight on voter participation and awareness. Gandhi and his team emphasise the urgent need to sensitise citizens, especially young voters and those from marginalised communities, about their electoral rights and duties. The march serves as a platform to promote democratic education, encouraging voters to scrutinise their registration status and participate actively in upcoming elections.

By travelling through remote areas and engaging directly with grassroots citizens, the yatra underlines that protecting democracy means not only safeguarding votes from theft but also ensuring voters are informed, empowered, and motivated to cast their ballots confidently.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

This ongoing confrontation is about more than politics; it is about trust in the very mechanisms through which Indians express their will. Gandhi’s emotionally charged campaign and the subsequent pushback from the Election Commission and BJP reflect a profound struggle for democratic legitimacy. As citizens, it is our shared duty to demand accountability, civility, and meaningful reform in the service of a free and fair franchise.
